Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) and Crunchyroll have released the first official trailer for the highly anticipated anime film Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Castle Arc Chapter 1 – Akaza Returns.

The first of a trilogy, Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train Chapter 1 – Akaza Returns, is set in the same world as the 2020 hit Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Train, the most successful anime film of all time.

The film is the final chapter and the first installment of a trilogy based on the popular anime series, adapted from the original manga by Koyoharu Gotouge. Since its debut in 2018, the anime series from animation studio UFOtable has become a global cultural phenomenon and is credited with fostering the rapid growth of the anime genre worldwide.

Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba the Movie: Mugen Castle Arc is the sequel to the fourth season of the Demon Slayer anime television series and the fifth film adaptation.

The previous film, Mugen Train (2020), grossed $570 million worldwide and still holds the record as the highest-grossing anime film of all time, as well as the most successful Japanese film globally.

The series follows the story of a young boy, Tanjiro Kamado, whose family was brutally murdered and whose sister, Nezuko, was turned into a demon. As he joins the Demon Slayer Corps, an organization specializing in demon hunting, he engages in fierce battles with numerous demons.

Directed by Haruo Tonozaki, the film is based on the “Mugenjo” arc. It follows Tanjiro and his fellow Demon Slayer Corps members as they face off in the final battle against the demons at their base, Mugenjo. SPE and Crunchyroll will release the trilogy across North America.

Demon Slayer: Mugenjo Arc is set to premiere on September 12. SPE and Crunchyroll hold global distribution rights except for Japan and several Asian territories.
