Smooth animation, dynamic camerawork, memorable dialogue. There are many ways to encounter anime. In the summer of 2025, a wide range of works will be broadcast, from severe to comedic, science fiction to everyday life, to entertain us. From these many works, we have selected three that will captivate you with their unique charm upon viewing them.
The long-awaited sequel to “Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru” (hereinafter: “Sono Bisque Doll wa Koi wo Suru”), the first season of which was broadcast in 2022, is a story about the interaction between the gal and otaku “Kitagawa Marin” and “Gojo Niina”, who aims to be a head maker of Hina dolls, through cosplay. While being pushed around by Marin, who embodies action, Niina enjoys the new world of making cosplay costumes, and their exchanges are comedic and bittersweet, making you want to smile as you watch.
The charm of their human nature, where they respect each other, is also one of the reasons why they have so many fans. In the first season of “Kisekoi”, I was captivated by the natural “smooth animation” of Marin and Niina’s movements. Many people must have been fascinated by the way Marin moves around in various costumes, such as uniforms, casual clothes, and cosplay.
The production team also had a strong commitment to the “beauty of the background depiction”. In the second season of the anime, none of that quality has been lost. Marin moves in a bunny girl outfit, and Niina’s godlike animation and human depiction, which make you excited, are worth the wait of three years.
The visual beauty of “Ruri no Houseki” is overwhelming. “Ruri no Houseki” is produced by Studio Bind, which has the power to produce anime of outstanding quality, such as “Mushoku Tensei” and “Big Brother is Over!”. “Tanigawa Ruri”, who fell in love at first sight with a crystal pendant, goes to the mountains to look for crystals, thinking “I should be able to find some myself!” Then, together with “Arato Nagi”, a graduate student majoring in mineralogy whom she met in the mountain behind her house, she begins to explore the mountains and rivers in search of various minerals.
The most attractive feature of this work is the beautiful depiction of the mountains and rivers. You can’t help but stare at the scenery, such as the warmth of the sunlight filtering through the trees and the refreshing coolness of the flowing water. In the mineral collection scene, the mountain climbing and riverside scenes are depicted from various camera angles.
The attention to detail in the depiction of the character’s movements is also great, making it a fun work to follow the movements of Ruri and the others. Since the original author, Keiichiro Shibuya, studied mineralogy, there are plenty of educational episodes, making this anime a perfect fit for the phrase “you’ll never get bored watching it.”
“Galaxy Express Milky Subway” is addictive due to the engaging conversations between its characters. “Galaxy Express Milky☆Subway” is a work for which Kameyama Yohei is responsible for almost everything, including the original story, direction, scriptwriting, character design, music direction, and production.
This work, which will be broadcast as a sequel to Kameyama’s independent anime “Milky Highway” three years ago, features two unusual gals, the cyborg “Makina” and the enhanced human “Chiharu”. In a near-future world, the two make a series of “mistakes” such as speeding and obstruction of justice, and then participate in volunteer work cleaning up the dilapidated planetary sensation train (commonly known as “Milky Subway”). It was supposed to end as a simple mission, but the train goes out of control, and they become embroiled in a significant incident.
The conversations between Chiharu and Makina, as well as the characters around them, are engaging in this work. The addictive discussions, which are haunting and hazy, along with the mysterious atmosphere that somehow evokes the Showa era, despite being set in a different time, will become increasingly captivating.
