On the 30th, the Japan Motion Picture Producers Federation (Eiren) reported that domestic movie box office revenue in 2023 increased by 4% to 221.5 billion yen.

The main reasons for the rise are a strong lineup of anime titles and a recovery in theater attendance. Hollywood movies also maintained their market share of 31%, the same as last year. The first place in the box office revenue ranking in 2023 is “THE FIRST SLAM DUNK” with 15.87 billion yen. Next was The Super Mario Bros. Movie ” with 14.02 billion yen, followed by “Detective Conan: The Black Iron Fish” in third place with 13.88 billion yen.

These three films were the only ones to gross more than 10 billion yen, but their overall box office revenue was second only to 2019’s 261 billion yen, the highest ever. Director Hayao Miyazaki’s ” How Do You Live? ” ranked fourth with 8.84 billion yen. Furthermore, “Mission: Impossible/Dead Reckoning” was the only Hollywood movie to break into the top 10, with 5.43 billion yen.

According to Toho President Hiroyasu Matsuoka, the company, which distributes”Godzilla-1.0 ”, Studio Ghibli films, and the “Detective Conan” series, has reported group box office revenue of over 100 billion yen for the first time. When asked why “Godzilla-1.0” was a hit in North America, he said, “It was profitable because the name Godzilla was well-known, and there were few competing films due to the Hollywood strike. ” With the development of distribution platforms, overseas audiences no longer feel comfortable reading subtitles.”
