It has been announced that “Horror Collector” will air on NHK General TV as a new anime series starting in the fall of 2026. The original work is a children’s novel of the same name by Midori Sato, screenwriter and novelist known for her work on the anime series “Sazae-san” and the TV drama “Telekinesis Family,” and Norio Tsuruta, a film director and writer known as the “father of J-horror,” who made his directorial debut with “Haunted Stories” and has worked on numerous popular horror films such as “Ring 0: Birthday” and “Orochi.”
The story follows a boy who “collects” urban legends and a girl who “materializes” them. The protagonist, a boy named Fushigi Chino, overcomes the challenges and conflicts he encounters along his journey with the help of his friends. Comments have been released from the original authors, Sato and Tsuruta, as well as Chief Producer Jun Sakata, who oversees production.
Thank you to Midori Sato, the original author! I’m so happy that the anime is being made that I could cry. Whether you’re familiar with “The Horror Collector” or not, whether you’re a fan of urban legends and scary stories or haven’t been interested in it until now, this is a must-watch. While based on a children’s novel, it’s also enjoyable for adults. It’s scary, but entertaining. Be sure to check out Chino Fushigi’s exploits!
Original author Norio Tsuruta, “The Horror Collector,” created “The Horror Collector” to create a “good character” in the popular J-horror genre, featuring scary ghosts like Sadako. Together with Midori Sato and others, we created this work. We’ve always dreamed of a collaboration between J-horror and anime, two of Japan’s world-renowned genres. Now, NHK has made our dream a reality. As the “father of J-horror,” I couldn’t be happier! Production Director: Jun Sakata, Chief Producer. “The Horror Collector” depicts this kind of fear. It exists right next to us in our daily lives, and we might encounter it at some random moment.
This is the kind of fear “The Horror Collector” depicts. On General TV, we deliver the fear that could be right next to you in the form of animation, reaching a broad audience of all ages. Fear has the power to move people’s hearts and expand their imaginations. We hope the anime “Horror Collector” becomes part of your daily life.
