The world was tragically informed by REDICE Studio of the passing of Solo Leveling illustrator Jang Sung-rak, who also went by the alias DUBU. The renowned illustrator suffered from chronic diseases during Solo Leveling’s original serialization run, and it is reported that these illnesses produced a brain hemorrhage, the cause of his death.

According to REDICE, Sung-rak’s private burial was already held over the weekend; he passed away on Saturday, July 23. It was reported that family and friends came to honor the life of the widely recognized and critically regarded artist.

Read on for a comprehensive analysis of the most recent developments surrounding the untimely death of Solo Leveling illustrator Jang Sung-rak, also referred to as DUBU.

It is unclear what the long-lasting ailment had afflicted Sung-rak, and it is probably best kept a secret out of deference to the author and his family. However, fans are already aware of the effects of this condition, as his series’ original serialization run was marred by frequent pauses that were required because of this chronic illness.

An anime adaptation of the series has been revealed, and it will debut in 2023 as a part of Crunchyroll Originals. A-1 Pictures is slated to produce it, and as of right now, not much is known about the cast or crew of the adaptation.

The main character of Solo Leveling, Sung Jinwoo, lives in a fantastical setting with a large population of Hunters—people endowed with magical abilities. Jinwoo is one of the weakest Hunters at the beginning of the series, but an unexplained and presumably evil force finally grants him the ability to level up.

The show follows him as he becomes more and more powerful, outperforming everyone who previously believed him to be weak.

Following Sung-rak’s passing, there has been a flood of messages from fans, many of whom have expressed gratitude for the wonderful artwork he produced for one of their favorite shows.

The fact that Sung-rak’s stunning and unique artwork for the manhwa series will not be adapted for anime is another grievance voiced by fans. Thus far, fans have responded well to the anime and given it positive reviews. It is charming to witness DUBU’s legacy continuing to amuse people even after his untimely passing.
