“The King of Kings,” which surpassed “Parasite” ($53.84 million) as the highest-grossing Korean film of all time, will be released in Japan on March 27, 2026, under the title “King of Kings.” A poster visual and stills have also been unveiled.
This animated film is inspired by “The Life of Jesus Christ,” a children’s book written by Charles Dickens, known for “A Christmas Carol,” which he banned from publication during his lifetime. MOFAC STUDIO, led by Korean filmmaker Chang Seong-ho, poured over 30 years of expertise into this 10-year production, depicting Jesus’ life from birth to resurrection. Released in over 90 countries across Asia, Europe, and Africa, the film has grossed over $60 million in North America. It surpassed “Parasite” ($53.84 million) to become the highest-grossing Korean film ever released in North America.
Despite being a Korean film, the English voice acting is performed by a star-studded cast. Kenneth Branagh of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” stars as Charles Dickens, and Uma Thurman of “Kill Bill” plays his wife, Catherine Dickens. Oscar Isaac, from the “Star Wars” series, plays Jesus Christ, and the cast also includes Mark Hamill, Pierce Brosnan, Forest Whitaker, and Ben Kingsley. Popular British author Charles Dickens (voiced by Kenneth Branagh) finds his relationship with his youngest son, Walter, strained when his five-year-old son’s pranks ruin a performance of his play, “A Christmas Carol.” Following his wife, Catherine’s (voiced by Uma Thurman), advice, Dickens decides to read to Walter a special story he wrote for his son, “King of Kings.”
The story recounts the epic life of Jesus Christ (voiced by Oscar Isaac), who was born in Bethlehem two thousand years ago. Jesus realized his mission as the “Son of God” at age 12, was baptized at age 30, performed many miracles before his disciples’ eyes, and continued to preach love and forgiveness to people. While faith in him spread, some grew hostile, viewing him as “blasphemy against God.” Jesus eventually predicted his own death and resurrection at the Last Supper and embarked on the path of trial by crucifixion.
The poster visual features a striking, calm Jesus Christ with outstretched arms. Behind him, we see his father, Charles Dickens, his wife, Catherine, their son Walter, who loves hero stories, and their beloved cat, creating a visual that builds anticipation for the epic adventures of the “hero” Jesus Christ, as told by his father. “King of Kings” will be released nationwide on March 27, 2014, including at TOHO Cinemas Hibiya.
