The main visual of the international animation film festival “Tokyo Anime Award Festival 2022 (TAAF2022)” (sponsored by the executive committee and the Association of Japanese Animations) was released on October 26th. The visuals produced by Kyoto Animation express the traditional cel animation production site in the Edo, Meiji, and Taisho eras.
TAAF has been held since 2014 to promote anime culture and industry and discover and train new human resources and held in Ikebukuro, Tokyo, from March 11th to 14th, 2022.
Comments from Kyoto Animation
The central visual concept I drew is to express the animation production scenery in the atmosphere of old Japan (Edo, Meiji, Taisho). Also, instead of the current mainstream digital production, the theme is traditional cel animation production.
In recent years when digitization has progressed, the number of staff who have experience in producing animation using cells has decreased at our company as well. For example, after painting a cell with paint, tapping it with a spatula from the backside of the cell to eliminate the generated air bubbles will not be known unless you are an experienced person. The woman in the upper right of the center of the primary visual is doing the work. She draws exaggeratedly, deformed, and simplified, but she is particular about reality like that.
This time, the illustration production was a fun work that allowed me to feel the animation production of my predecessor or think about the future. I hope this main visual will add a touch of color to the TAAF2022.
