The movie ‘Hypnosis Mic’ has surpassed 1 million viewers! With box office revenue exceeding 2.5 billion yen, it is the first movie in Japan to achieve this double crown.

This is Japan’s first interactive film based on the music-based character rap project “Hypnosis Mic,” which began in 2017. Audience members use their smartphones to vote for the winner of the rap battle, with a total of five votes taking place during the screening. The story changes depending on the vote results, resulting in a total of 48 different screening patterns and seven different endings.

The film began screening in 85 theaters in February 2025. However, due to the limited number of interactive screening equipment available, it continued to be shown in a limited number of theaters, ranging from 60 to 80. To commemorate the 8th anniversary of the project, a revival screening is being held at 66 theaters nationwide from Tuesday, September 2nd.

There have been many past films that started with a limited release in around 10 theaters, then gained momentum and expanded to over 150 theaters, becoming massive hits. However, since the “Weekly Movie Rankings” began in 2004, Hypnosis Mic is the first film in Japan to gross over 2.5 billion yen from the first day of release in fewer than 100 theaters.

This marks the first time in Japanese cinema history that a film has been an interactive film, and the first time in Japan that a movie has exceeded 2.5 billion yen in revenue in fewer than 100 cinemas.
