A mysterious figure glowing due to regulations
In popular manga, extreme scenes are essential for shocking viewers and instilling fear in viewers, but sometimes excessive scenes are “censored” by being hidden by black or white light in anime. Although the depictions are done with consideration for the viewers, some scenes have become hilarious due to censorship.
“Detective Conan” The anime version of the manga “Detective Conan” (written by Gosho Aoyama), a flagship work of “Weekly Shonen Sunday” (Shogakukan), was censored from the memorable first episode, and the surreal scene made some viewers laugh. In the first episode of the anime, “Shinichi Kudo (Conan Edogawa)” was forced to drink “APTX 4869” and turned into a child, and he was shown solving a murder case at an amusement park.
The scene that was censored was the scene of the moment of murder, depicting the head of a man named Kishida, who was riding a roller coaster being blown off. The scene where the head was gone and blood spurted out was censored with a white light.
This made it look like a mysterious white light was emitting from the neck. Looking back on the impression at the time, some people on the Internet said, “It looked like a beam was coming out of the neck” and “It looked like a mysterious light was emitting from the neck, and it made me laugh.”
In addition, this episode was remade and broadcast on “Friday Road Show!” (now Friday Road Show) in 2016, and it was not censored, and the blood spurting out was depicted vividly. “Terra Formars” Speaking of works with many restrictions, the anime “Terra Formars” (written by Takaya Yuu/illustrated by Tachibana Kenichi), which is currently being serialized in “Weekly Young Jump” (Shueisha), cannot be left out. Due to the many unnatural blackout restrictions, some fans even called this work a “broadcast accident.”
Shortly, where the story is set, various problems arise due to population growth, putting the Earth in danger of bursting. To escape the crisis, humans try to change the environment to one that humans can live in by releasing cockroaches on Mars. Still, the cockroaches evolve into humanoids and become formidable enemies called “Terraformars.”
To exterminate them, the crew of Annex 1 gains the abilities of insects through a particular “Bugs Surgery” and heads to Mars, where they engage in a brutal battle. The Terraformars attack humans mercilessly, just as humans hate cockroaches. In the original work, there were many horrifying scenes, such as the Terraformars tearing off their opponents’ necks.
However, most of these are hidden in the anime. In the scene in episode 3 where a human’s head is torn off, the cut surface and the severed head are painted over with black circles. This blatant hiding method became a hot topic, with people saying, “It just looks like a joke,” and “It’s a total broadcast accident.” A collage was even created, replacing the black circles with basketballs and other things.
Even now, when people think of works with many restrictions, this work comes to mind. “BLOOD-C” is famous for its many grotesque depictions, and as a result of many scenes being restricted, some viewers said they “didn’t understand it.” This work is an original anime produced by the animation production company Production IG and the creative group CLAMP.
The protagonist, “Kisaragi Saya,” lives a peaceful life surrounded by friends at “Private Sankaku Academy” while fulfilling her duty to defeat the mysterious monsters, “Old Ones,” that eat humans. Since the Old Ones attack humans, the work depicts merciless splatter depictions of blood flying and bodies being torn apart. In particular, the “Eight-Headed Rabbit” in the final episode kills the humans it captures by crushing them like a blender. These extreme depictions are depicted on the DVD, with even cut surfaces of flesh and scattered organs being depicted.
However, most of the scenes were censored at the time of broadcast, and explicit depictions were hidden using black or white lights, blurring, etc. Viewers commented on the number of censored scenes and the blatant hiding of scenes, saying, “There are so many censors that I don’t understand the meaning,” and “The cut of the gory depiction was so unnatural that it made me laugh.” Some even said they found the scenes “funny.”
