The opening theme song for the TV anime “Chi. -About the Movement of the Earth-” to be broadcast on NHK General TV in October has been decided to be a new song by Sakanaction.
This TV anime adaptation of the manga of the same name by author Uo Yutaka, which has won numerous awards, including the Manga Grand Prize at the 26th Tezuka Osamu Cultural Prize, tells the story of those who risked their beliefs and their lives to prove the heliocentric theory. Voice actors include Maaya Sakamoto as the child prodigy Rafal, Kenjiro Tsuda as the examiner Novak, and Shou Hayami as the mysterious scholar Hubert.
The story is set in a particular European country in the 15th century. In an era when the “geocentric theory,” which states that the Earth is the center of the universe and the planets move around it, was considered the truth of this world, and believing or researching anything that overturned that theory was a serious crime, the child prodigy Rafal learned of the possibility of the heliocentric theory through the words of the mysterious scholar Hubert.
He was called a genius by those around him, and even though he considered himself a genius, an uncontrollable and intense intellectual curiosity began to grow in him. “What on earth do I have to sacrifice to know everything about this world?” asks Rafał, as he risks his knowledge, blood, and even his life to prove the heliocentric theory. What fate awaits him? The opening theme song for this work will be Sakanaction’s first new song in two years and its first TV anime theme song. Sakanaction’s Ichiro Yamaguchi said of the original work, “The historical facts and fiction are mixed on the edge of the story, and no matter how far you read, there are no logical gaps.
There is also a mixture of human passion, and it was a work that was built on a great sense of balance. Regarding the theme song, he revealed, “Rather than making the theme of the original work easy to understand and concrete, we focused on how to make it as abstract and persuasive as possible.” Regarding the fact that the new song, after a two-year hiatus, is the band’s first TV anime theme song, he commented, “It is a great honor for the band to be involved in this wonderful work.”
Sakanaction Yamaguchi Ichiro’s comments Impressions on reading the original work・ScriptI could read the work without prior knowledge, so I enjoyed it. The parts that seem to be historical facts and fiction are mixed at the very edge, but no matter how far you read, there are no logical gaps. I thought it was a work that was established on a great sense of balance, with the passion of humanity mixed in.
Thoughts were put into the theme song, a word for fans. Rather than making the theme of the original work easy to understand and concrete, we focused on making it as abstract and persuasive as possible.
Despite being on hiatus for two years and this being our first new song in a while, we could sing the theme song for a TV anime for the first time with this work, “Chi. -About the Movement of the Earth-“. And above all, it is a great honor for the band to be involved in this beautiful work. We hope that our feelings will be conveyed to all listeners.
