It has been announced that the work of a popular manga artist, who has a serial in a weekly boys’ manga magazine, will finally be adapted into an anime. The talks on the anime adaptation had been ongoing behind the scenes for some time. Still, initially, a difference of opinion arose between the manga artist and the animation company, and it was uncertain whether it would materialize. However, it has now been made public.
The pen name of the manga artist who appears in this work is “Ooba Kei”. His profile has never been made public, but in fact, his true identity is a “ghost”. In a weekly boys’ manga magazine with strict weekly deadlines, he continues to produce masterpieces at a speed that seems impossible for a human to do, and readers worship him as a “god!”, but he is not a “god” but a “ghost”. Mr. Obake is very particular and did not want to leave his work to someone else, but he accepted the offer to make it into an anime on the condition that “the manga artist will fully supervise it”.
The anime producer was worried, “Can a weekly serial writer do that!?”, but he managed to get through it with his “ghost work,” which is not a miracle. Some readers have also expressed their desire to see this work brought to life in real life!
The artist behind this work is Jun Takano (@takano_66), a manga artist whose work “The Mine Family Twins Don’t Look Alike” was published in the 9th issue of ” Good! Afternoon ” ( Kodansha ) in 2024. Takano is a manga artist who has won numerous awards in the “Afternoon Shiki Award” sponsored by Kodansha. We spoke to Takano about this work. Why did you make the manga artist a ghost? The manga artist featured in this manga is inspired by the concept of the strongest manga artist I can think of. He doesn’t need to sleep, he draws quickly… something like that!
The reason I chose the setting of a ghost is because I thought, “There’s no manga artist like that in real life…” –So “There’s no manga artist like that = a ghost!” Yes. A slightly cute character would make it a pop gag manga without being unpleasant. Anyway, I try to make it a gag manga with a positive development, like “Obake Sensei can do it, he’ll make it!” or “He can solve even the most difficult problems, how will he solve it?” In this episode, a fan who is happy to hear that the anime will be made meets Obake Sensei by chance in the park.
This fan is a recurring character who has appeared frequently in previous stories. He appears in episodes 1 to 4 and again in episode 7. However, the fans never suspected that Obake was drawing manga, and Obake Sensei was also frustrated that he hadn’t realized he was his fan.
This time, Obake Sensei noticed, but will the day come when the fans notice? It is included in the first episode, so please read it! Interview cooperation: Takano Jun.
