The names given to the moves, characters, villages, etc. in Masashi Kishimoto’s Naruto were among its most awesome features. They increased the attraction of Naruto to fans of manga and anime, even though they didn’t always have a significant impact on the plot. One such name was Gaara, the Kazekage of Sunagakure and a Shinobi.
In Naruto’s generation, Gaara was the first character to become a Kage. Because he was the one-tailed Shukaku’s jinchuriki, he was first shown as a villain. However, he eventually turned good and rose to prominence in the series, particularly as the commander in chief of the Fourth Great Ninja War.
At one point, Kishimoto disclosed that he had originally thought of a different name for Gaara. His editor, however, was not too fond of the name and proposed “Gaara.” Kishimoto even disclosed that he and his editor got into a heated argument about the character’s name.

In an interview from 2013, the author of Naruto discussed his plans to rename Gaara Kotarou Fuuma. The interview was eventually translated and posted on Naruto Fandom by @Yagami1211. His editor, on the other hand, thought this name was too long and recommended replacing it. Kishimoto, nevertheless, thought the moniker was ideal for the Sand Ninja.
“For me, Gaara’s name was supposed to be Kotarou Fuuma. But my editor strongly disagreed. I objected and said it was a name fitting for a sand ninja and that went on for weeks. Maybe he did refused because of Fuuma no Kojirou? Even today, I still don’t know the reason for that. When I said “Then how a I supposed to call him ?” My editor said “Gaara” like An Ashura that only likes himself.”
Kishimoto claims he still doesn’t know why he and his editor couldn’t agree on the character’s name. However, he did admit that the manga writer liked the name Gaara right away, as it had been suggested by his editor.
Masashi Kishimoto Says He Quit Paying Attention to Surnames Because of Gaara
Masashi Kishimoto also discussed the origins of the Gaara name throughout the conversation. The author claims that after his editor visited the Gaara Yuzawa ski resort, the term came to be the ideal way to identify the sand ninja.
“I actually liked that so I kept it. Then later he told me that was the name of a Ski Resort (Gaara Yuzawa in Japan) and That he just returned from the place. I said “That’s just bullsh*t !” but since I already took the name in the story and I liked it, I kept it. Later on I stopped focusing on surnames and just went for how the name sounds and what the name means.”
In discussing Gaara’s name, Kishimoto disclosed that he chose not to give him a surname since he liked it so much. The author then concentrated on the first names, their pronunciation, and their significance.
