The upcoming TV anime A Certain Dark Side of Girls Coexisting (ITEM) has unveiled a striking new key visual featuring all five members of ITEM, including the newly introduced Hanano Choubi. The latest reveal gives fans a closer look at the dangerous group at the center of the anime and builds anticipation for its October 2026 premiere.
The anime is scheduled to begin broadcasting in Japan on October 9, 2026, with episodes airing on TOKYO MX and BS11 at 24:30 JST, while AT-X will broadcast the series from 22:30 JST. Domestic streaming information has also been officially announced, giving viewers several options to follow the new A Certain spin-off.
New Key Visual Brings All Five ITEM Members Together
The newly released key visual features Mugino Shizuri, Takitsubo Rikou, Frenda Seivelun, Kinuhata Saiai, and Hanano Choubi standing together in a dark urban setting.
The visual has a noticeably darker atmosphere than the earlier teaser artwork. A mysterious green glow associated with Mugino’s ability, Meltdowner, illuminates the scene and emphasizes the dangerous world in which ITEM operates. Rather than presenting the girls simply as a group of powerful espers, the artwork highlights the contrast between their ordinary-looking appearances and the violent missions they undertake behind the scenes.
The first teaser visual introduced the original four members of ITEM: Mugino Shizuri (Ami Koshimizu), Takitsubo Rikou (Aya Suzaki), Frenda Seivelun (Maaya Uchida), and Kinuhata Saiai (Chinatsu Akasaki).
The new key visual adds Hanano Choubi, voiced by Kana Hishikawa, officially revealing the five-member lineup that will play a central role in the upcoming anime.
Who Is Hanano Choubi?
For viewers who are new to the A Certain universe, Hanano Choubi is particularly important because she represents a major change to ITEM’s familiar lineup.
Choubi is a Level 0 and does not currently have a confirmed supernatural ability. Instead, she specializes in an extraordinary form of disguise and infiltration. Her skills allow her to reproduce another person’s appearance, behavior, voice, mannerisms, and even highly specific identifying characteristics, making her exceptionally useful for undercover missions.
She is introduced as the group’s new “fifth member”, joining ITEM through an introduction from the mysterious “Voice on the Phone.” Despite possessing an extremely valuable skill set, Choubi is described as timid, serious, and easily frightened. Her unfortunate timing and tendency to become isolated also make her very different from the more aggressive personalities already present in ITEM.
This contrast could become one of the anime’s most interesting character dynamics. ITEM is already a group filled with strong personalities, but Choubi’s more nervous and vulnerable nature could give viewers a different perspective on the darker side of Academy City.
What Is ITEM?
ITEM is an elite underground organization operating within Academy City, the technologically advanced setting at the heart of the wider A Certain franchise.
Academy City appears to be a futuristic educational city where students undergo special programs designed to develop supernatural abilities. Students are classified from Level 0, meaning no ability, to Level 5, the highest level of esper development.
However, beneath Academy City’s seemingly peaceful surface exists a secret world known as the “Dark Side.” Various organizations carry out missions that cannot be publicly acknowledged, including espionage, assassinations, sabotage, tage and other dangerous operations.
ITEM is one of these groups.
The team is led by Mugino Shizuri, one of Academy City’s seven Level 5 espers. Her ability, Meltdowner, allows her to manipulate electrons in an extremely destructive manner, making her one of the group’s primary combat forces.
Takitsubo specializes in tracking targets by reading their AIM diffusion fields, while Frenda relies on explosives, traps and physical combat. Kinuhata uses her ability to manipulate nitrogen, giving her powerful defensive capabilities.
Choubi now adds an entirely different specialty: infiltration and disguise.
Main Cast and Characters
The five central members of ITEM are:
- Mugino Shizuri — Ami Koshimizu: The leader of ITEM and a Level 5 esper capable of using the devastating Meltdowner ability.
- Takitsubo Rikou — Aya Suzaki: ITEM’s tracking specialist, who can locate targets through their AIM diffusion fields.
- Frenda Seivelun — Maaya Uchida: A Level 0 who specializes in explosives, traps and physical combat.
- Kinuhata Saiai — Chinatsu Akasaki: A Level 4 esper who manipulates nitrogen and serves as one of ITEM’s main defensive fighters.
- Hanano Choubi — Kana Hishikawa: The new fifth member, a Level 0 and extraordinary disguise specialist.
The addition of Choubi is especially significant because the anime is not simply revisiting the familiar ITEM lineup. Her arrival is directly connected to the story’s new conflicts and the deeper mysteries surrounding Academy City’s Dark Side.
Story: A New Chapter in Academy City’s Dark Side
A Certain Dark Side of Girls Coexisting is a spin-off of the larger A Certain franchise, based on the light novel series written by Kazuma Kamachi.
The story focuses specifically on the girls of ITEM and explores the dangerous work that takes place away from the public face of Academy City.
At first glance, the five girls may look like an unusual group of students, but their lives are closely connected to the city’s underground operations. They are specialists who are sent into situations where ordinary rules no longer apply.
The official story description teases that the arrival of the fifth girl will lead ITEM into an even deeper part of the Dark Side. The series therefore combines action, supernatural abilities, underground missions, and character-driven interactions while exploring a side of the A Certain universe that has received less focus in previous anime adaptations.
For newcomers, no extensive knowledge of every previous A Certain anime is necessarily required to understand the basic premise. The important thing to know is that Academy City is a technologically advanced city filled with students who possess supernatural abilities, while the Dark Side represents the secret and much more dangerous world operating beneath that society.
J.C.STAFF Returns for the Anime
The new anime is being produced by J.C.STAFF, the studio with a long history of working on the A Certain franchise.
The director is Tatsuyuki Nagai, who previously directed A Certain Scientific Railgun and is therefore closely familiar with Academy City’s characters and setting.
The main staff includes:
- Original Work: Kazuma Kamachi
- Original Illustrations: Nirotsu
- Original Character Design: Kiyotaka Haimura and Nirotsu
- Director: Tatsuyuki Nagai
- Series Composition: Shogo Yasukawa
- Character Design: Shigeki Kimoto
- Animation Character Design Cooperation: Kiyotaka Haimura, Nirotsu, Motoi Fuyukawa and Strelka
- Music: Maiko Iuchi
- Animation Production: J.C.STAFF
Nagai’s involvement is particularly notable for longtime A Certain fans because of his previous work on A Certain Scientific Railgun. His experience with the franchise’s Academy City setting should help the new series maintain a strong visual and narrative connection with the existing universe.
Opening and Ending Theme Songs Revealed
The anime’s musical lineup has also been announced.
The opening theme is “Ghost Sequence” by East Of Eden, while the ending theme is “原子崩し” by Kishida Kyodan & The Akeboshi Rockets. The latter title uses the Japanese name associated with Mugino’s signature ability, Meltdowner, further tying the music to ITEM’s identity.
With J.C.STAFF handling animation and Maiko Iuchi composing the score, the series has brought together several creators with experience in the A Certain franchise.
Domestic Streaming Information
The anime’s Japanese streaming schedule has now been officially revealed.
ABEMA will stream the series from October 9 at 24:30 JST, while ABEMA Premium will make episodes available earlier, beginning October 8 at 24:30 JST.
The first episode will also receive a special real-time advance stream on ABEMA on October 3 at 23:00 JST.
From October 16, the anime will begin rolling out on additional subscription services, including Anime Hodai, d Anime Store, DMM TV, FOD Premium, Hulu, niconico and U-NEXT.
Transactional platforms including Bandai Channel, Google TV and Prime Video will also begin distribution from October 16, with some services following on October 17. Streaming schedules are subject to change, so viewers should check the individual services for the latest information.
Official Web Radio Announced
Fans will also be able to spend more time with the four original ITEM members through a new official web radio program titled “A Certain Radio’s Girl Coexistence”.
The program will feature the four main voice actresses:
- Ami Koshimizu — Mugino Shizuri
- Aya Suzaki — Takitsubo Rikou
- Maaya Uchida — Frenda Seivelun
- Chinatsu Akasaki — Kinuhata Saiai
The four performers will take turns serving as hosts rather than appearing together every time. The program will explore the anime’s characters, production, and various behind-the-scenes topics through casual talk and radio segments.
The first episode is scheduled for October 2, 2026, at 6:00 PM JST, with new episodes planned every other Friday at 6:00 PM JST. The program is distributed through the Internet Radio Station Onsen, with additional premium content available for supporters.
This should be a particularly entertaining companion program for longtime fans because the four original ITEM voice actresses have been associated with these characters for years.
Dengeki Bunko Autumn Festival Online 2026
The anime is also scheduled to participate in Dengeki Bunko Autumn Festival Online 2026, a major promotional event for titles connected to the Dengeki Bunko label.
The online event will take place on October 3, 2026, from 4:00 PM JST, with free viewing available exclusively through ABEMA. The official anime site has confirmed the participation of A Certain Dark Side of Girls Coexisting, although additional program details are still expected.
Because the event takes place just days before the anime’s broadcast premiere, it could provide fans with additional cast appearances, promotional information, or other updates before the series officially begins.
The Light Novel Series Is Also Continuing
The anime is adapting the A Certain Dark Side of Girls Coexisting light novel series by Kazuma Kamachi, with illustrations by Nirotsu and character designs credited to Kiyotaka Haimura and Nirotsu.
The seventh volume is scheduled to be released in Japan on October 9, 2026, the same day the television anime begins. The new volume follows ITEM as they take on another bounty-related mission, while conflicts involving the Mugino family and criminal organizations develop outside Academy City. The story also teases the involvement of Academy City’s mysterious Number Six, adding another major threat to the ongoing conflict.
This simultaneous anime and novel release gives fans another reason to keep an eye on the franchise throughout October.
Why This Anime Matters to A Certain Fans
The A Certain franchise has traditionally divided its attention among several different perspectives, including Touma Kamijou’s story in A Certain Magical Index and Misaka Mikoto’s story in A Certain Scientific Railgun.
This new series offers something different by putting ITEM and Academy City’s underground world at the center of the story.
That makes the anime particularly appealing to viewers who enjoy the darker side of the franchise. Instead of focusing primarily on school life or the public face of Academy City, the series explores the people who perform dangerous jobs in the shadows.
The addition of Hanano Choubi could also provide a fresh emotional angle. While Mugino, Takitsubo, Frenda, and Kinuhata are already familiar to many longtime fans, Choubi enters the group as an outsider with a completely different personality and skill set.
Her arrival may challenge the existing group’s dynamics while giving viewers a new way to understand the complicated relationships between members of ITEM.
A Darker A Certain Story Is Coming This October
With its new five-member key visual, confirmed streaming schedule, official web radio, returning franchise talent and a newly expanded cast, A Certain Dark Side of Girls Coexisting is shaping up to be one of the notable A Certain projects of the Fall 2026 anime season.
The anime will officially premiere in Japan on October 9, 2026, with TOKYO MX and BS11 airing it at 24:30 JST and AT-X beginning at 22:30 JST. The series will introduce newcomers to the dangerous world of ITEM while giving longtime A Certain fans a closer look at one of Academy City’s most notorious underground teams.
With Hanano Choubi now standing alongside Mugino, Takitsubo, Frenda, nd Kinuhata, the five-member ITEM lineup is ready to enter a new chapter—and judging from the dark atmosphere of the latest key visual, their next mission is unlikely to be peaceful.
