Spread the love

Satoshi Mizukami’s acclaimed reincarnation fantasy manga Spirit Circle is officially receiving a television anime adaptation, with broadcasting and streaming scheduled to begin in December 2026. The announcement, made on November 5, 2026, introduced the first teaser visual, promotional video, main voice cast, and production staff. The series will consist of 18 episodes and marks the final directorial work of the late Tatsuo Sato, who passed away in April 2026.

The main cast features Kazuki Ura as Fuuta Okeya, Anna Nagase as Kouko Ishigami, Eri Yukimura as Run,e and Yuichi Nakamura as East. Nagase will also perform the ending theme, titled “Koko ga Donna Sekai Demo” (No Matter What Kind of World This Is), marking her first solo singing performance.

Produced by NAGOMI and EOTA, two studios within the Twin Engine group, the anime adapts Mizukami’s completed manga, a supernatural science-fiction adventure built around reincarnation, past-life memories, revenge and the connections between souls.

The announcement is especially meaningful because the production was completed after director Tatsuo Sato’s death. Assistant director Kentaro Mizuno and the production team continued the project while carrying forward Sato’s creative vision.

Spirit Circle Anime Reveals First Teaser Visual

The first teaser visual introduces Kouko Ishigami in a striking and unsettling composition. She looks directly toward the viewer with a determined, almost threatening expression. A large wound on her forehead and the blood running down her face make the image particularly memorable.

The visual is accompanied by the powerful tagline:

“No matter how many times I’m reborn, I’ll come to kill you.”

This short statement immediately establishes the central conflict between Kouko and Fuuta. Their relationship is not an ordinary rivalry between two students. It is connected to something that happened in their previous lives, and Kouko appears determined to settle that conflict regardless of how many times they are reincarnated.

The image also raises several questions for newcomers. Why does Kouko want to kill Fuuta? What happened in their previous lives? And why does she believe that ending his soul is the only way to break their connection?

Rather than explaining the entire story, the teaser visual creates an atmosphere of mystery and anticipation. It introduces the anime’s darker themes while hinting at the emotional history behind the two protagonists.

First Promotional Video Shows Fuuta and Kouko’s Repeated Past Lives

Along with the teaser visual, the production team released the first promotional video, offering the first substantial look at the anime’s animation, characters, and story.

The PV begins when Kouko Ishigami suddenly asks Fuuta Okeya a simple but unusual question:

“Do you believe in reincarnation?”

Fuuta is confused by her question. However, Kouko soon reveals that their relationship is connected to a series of past lives and that their conflict has continued across different periods.

She also tells him:

“You’ll have to die seven more times!!”

The promotional video then presents glimpses of the different lives experienced by Fuuta and Kouko. The characters appear in several historical settings, with their appearances, occupations,s and circumstances changing from one era to another.

Despite these changes, their souls remain connected.

The PV suggests that Kouko’s determination to kill Fuuta is not simply an impulsive reaction. She has carried her hatred and desire for revenge through multiple reincarnations, and she wants to put an end to their repeating conflict.

However, the video also includes a surprisingly warm scene showing four characters walking together in one of the past eras. Their friendly appearance creates a sharp contrast with the hostility seen elsewhere in the trailer.

That peaceful moment is interrupted by an ominous confession:

“I killed him.”

The line adds another layer of mystery to the relationship between the characters. It suggests that their shared history is more complicated than a simple story of revenge and that the truth may involve emotions that cannot easily be divided into right and wrong.

The PV also introduces Rune, Fuuta’s mysterious guardian spirit, and East, the spirit associated with Kouko. Their appearances indicate that the story will involve more than the two main characters as Fuuta begins exploring the truth behind his previous lives.

Near the end of the trailer, Fuuta asks Kouko whether the conflict is really so important that it matters more than their present lives. Kouko responds with unwavering determination:

“We will end our battle in this life.”

This exchange captures the central tension of the series: two people connected by a long history of conflict must decide whether their past will continue to control their future.

What Is Spirit Circle About?

Spirit Circle is a supernatural reincarnation fantasy manga written and illustrated by Satoshi Mizukami, who is also known for works such as Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer (also known as Planet With the Biscuit Hammer) and Sengoku Youko.

The story follows Fuuta Okeya, an ordinary 14-year-old middle school student who has one unusual ability: he can see spirits.

Despite this ability, Fuuta initially leads a relatively peaceful school life. His everyday routine changes dramatically when a mysterious and beautiful transfer student named Kouko Ishigami arrives at his school.

Kouko has a scar on her forehead and an unusually strong interest in Fuuta. However, her attention is not friendly. She reveals that their souls are connected through a terrible incident from a previous life and declares that she intends to kill him to end their cycle of reincarnation.

Fuuta cannot understand why someone he has only just met would want to kill him. He also has no clear memory of the events that supposedly connect their souls.

To discover the truth, he begins a journey through his previous lives using an extraordinary object known as the Spirit Circle.

This journey takes him across different historical periods, cultures, eras, and environments, from ancient times to the distant future. In each life, Fuuta encounters new circumstances, relationships, and challenges. His identity changes, but the connections between the souls remain.

As he experiences these different lives, Fuuta gradually discovers the history behind his relationship with Kouko and the reasons for their repeated conflict.

The central mystery is not simply whether Fuuta can survive Kouko’s attacks. It is whether he can understand the truth behind their shared past and find a way to break the cycle that has continued across generations.

Seven Lives, Different Eras and One Connected Story

One of the most distinctive features of Spirit Circle is its structure.

Rather than following a single protagonist through one continuous period, the manga explores seven different lives set in different eras and environments.

Each incarnation has its own personality, background, relationships,s and circumstances. Some lives take place in historical settings, while others introduce very different worlds and possibilities.

This approach allows Mizukami to explore how people can experience similar emotions and conflicts despite living in completely different circumstances.

A person may be born into a different family, work in a different profession, or live in a completely unfamiliar society, yet the connections between souls can continue to influence their lives.

For Fuuta, experiencing these previous lives is essential to understanding the present.

The different incarnations also allow the story to move between genres and settings. It can introduce elements of historical adventure, fantasy, mystery, science fiction,n and human drama while maintaining one central narrative.

This is one reason the original manga has attracted readers who enjoy stories that gradually reveal a much larger mystery.

The anime’s 18-episode format is particularly notable in this context. It gives the production team more time than a standard 12-episode season to present the different lives and develop the connections between them.

Why Is Kouko Determined to Kill Fuuta?

Kouko Ishigami is introduced as a mysterious transfer student whose first major interaction with Fuuta is an unexpected threat.

She tells him that their souls are connected by a serious crime committed in a previous life. She also believes that killing his soul is necessary to end the cycle of reincarnation.

For Kouko, the conflict is not limited to the present. Her feelings have been carried across several lives, and she appears unwilling to let the past remain unresolved.

This creates an interesting contrast between the two protagonists.

Fuuta initially knows very little about their shared history. He is an ordinary middle school student trying to understand why his life has suddenly become dangerous.

Kouko, on the other hand, appears to know much more. Her determination suggests that she has already concluded what happened and what must be done.

However, the story gradually reveals that the relationship between the two is more complicated than it first appears.

The promotional video also hints at moments of friendship and affection between people connected to their past lives. These scenes raise the possibility that the history between Fuuta and Kouko contains more than anger and revenge.

The central question is whether understanding the past will bring the two characters closer to reconciliation or make their conflict even more painful.

Meet the Main Cast of Spirit Circle

The anime has announced four main voice actors who will portray the central characters.

Fuuta Okeya – Kazuki Ura

Fuuta Okeya is the protagonist of the series. He is an ordinary second-year middle school student, except for his ability to see spirits and a birthmark on his left cheek.

His peaceful life changes after meeting Kouko, who reveals the connection between their souls and introduces him to the mystery of his previous lives.

As Fuuta begins experiencing those lives, he must confront versions of himself who lived in different eras and circumstances. These past identities have their own emotions and histories, making the journey an important part of his personal growth.

Kazuki Ura will voice Fuuta and several of his past-life incarnations.

In his comment, Ura described Fuuta as a typical middle school boy who becomes flustered around a cute transfer student and enjoys fooling around with his classmates.

However, meeting Kouko forces him to confront versions of himself that feel almost like different people. Ura hopes viewers will experience the emotional weight of these lives alongside Fuuta, including feelings that cannot easily be classified as good or evil.

Kouko Ishigami – Anna Nagase

Kouko Ishigami is the mysterious transfer student who changes Fuuta’s life.

She has a prominent scar on her forehead and refers to Fuuta as her fated enemy, believing that his soul must be destroyed to end their cycle of reincarnation.

Although her behaviour appears aggressive, the story gradually explores the emotions and history behind her determination.

Anna Nagase will voice Kouko as well as several of her previous-life incarnations.

Nagase revealed that she became completely absorbed in the original manga and finished reading all its volumes in a single day.

She also acknowledged that the story requires a wide range of emotional expression from its voice actors. During recording, she carefully considered Kouko’s determination, resolve, and more delicate feelings.

Nagase expressed her happiness about the anime adaptation while recognising the responsibility of portraying such a complex character.

Rune – Eri Yukimura

Rune is Fuuta’s mysterious guardian spirit, who appears alongside the Spirit Circle.

She has a cheerful, innocent personality and treats Fuuta as her master. Her lively behaviour provides a contrast to the darker atmosphere surrounding Fuuta and Kouko’s conflict.

Rune is also familiar with Kouko and East, suggesting that she has a connection to the larger history of the characters.

Eri Yukimura will voice Rune.

In her comment, Yukimura described Rune as a character who suddenly appears with an energetic and cheerful personality. She also explained that Rune’s positive attitude felt like a source of comfort while reading the original manga.

The voice actress expressed her happiness at being selected for the role and highlighted how carefully the original story handles the connections between people across different eras and countries.

East – Yuichi Nakamura

East is the mysterious spirit associated with Kouko.

Unlike Rune, East has a calm and gentle personality. He watches over Kouko and Fuuta, although his deeper connection to the two characters remains unclear.

His role is particularly intriguing because the official character introduction hints that he shares a significant relationship with Fuuta.

Yuichi Nakamura will voice East.

Nakamura described Spirit Circle as a story that is not always simple or immediately understandable. He encouraged viewers to pay close attention to its different eras and worlds as the protagonist gradually discovers what it means to live through each of his incarnations.

He also expressed his hope that his performance would contribute to the distinctive atmosphere of the anime.

A Special Casting Detail: The Main Actors Also Voice Past-Life Characters

One of the most interesting production details is that the anime’s main voice actors will also portray multiple incarnations of their characters.

Because the story follows souls through different lives, Fuuta and Kouko appear in several forms throughout the narrative.

Kazuki Ura voices Fuuta as well as past-life characters including Fon, Van, Flow, Hōtarō, Rafal and Fuuko.

Similarly, Anna Nagase voices Kouko and several of her previous incarnations, including Stona, the Witch, Roka, Iwana, Lapis and Kōsuke Ishigami.

This casting approach helps maintain a connection between the different versions of the characters. Although their appearances, personalities and circumstances change, the same actors give their souls a consistent voice across different eras.

It is also an important performance challenge, as the voice actors must distinguish between characters who share the same soul but have different backgrounds and emotional experiences.

For viewers, recognising these voices may become another interesting part of following the anime’s complicated reincarnation narrative.

Tatsuo Sato’s Final Directorial Work

One of the most significant aspects of the anime announcement is the involvement of director Tatsuo Sato.

Sato was a respected anime director and writer known for his work on science-fiction, adventure, and coming-of-age productions.

His major credits include:

  • Martian Successor Nadesico
  • Stellvia of the Universe
  • Bodacious Space Pirates

For Spirit Circle, Sato served as both director and series composition writer. Series composition refers to the overall planning and structure of an anime’s story, including how the original material is organised into television episodes.

However, Sato passed away in April 2026, before the anime’s announcement.

The production company confirmed that Spirit Circle became his final directorial work.

Following his death, production continued under the leadership of assistant director Kentaro Mizuno and the rest of the creative team. They completed the anime while carrying forward the ideas and intentions Sato had brought to the project.

NAGOMI, EOTA and Twin Engine released a joint statement expressing their gratitude and respect for the director.

They explained that Sato contributed greatly to the production through his knowledge, experience and extraordinary passion. The staff worked together to preserve his vision and bring the completed series to audiences.

The announcement has therefore become more than a standard adaptation reveal. It also serves as an opportunity to recognise Sato’s final contribution to the anime industry.

Assistant Director Kentaro Mizuno on Completing the 18-Episode Series

Assistant director Kentaro Mizuno also shared a comment about the adaptation.

He described Spirit Circle as a classic coming-of-age story combined with a science-fiction adventure for younger audiences.

The anime was particularly meaningful because it arrived in the year marking the 10th anniversary of the manga’s completion.

Mizuno praised the staff and cast for putting their energy into depicting the reincarnation stories of Fuuta, Kouko,o and the other characters.

He also encouraged viewers to enjoy all 18 episodes and revisit the series to discover additional details.

His comment highlights one of the biggest challenges of adapting the manga: presenting several different lives, eras, and emotional relationships while maintaining the overall continuity of the story.

Original Creator Satoshi Mizukami Shares His Thoughts

Original manga creator Satoshi Mizukami also commented on the anime adaptation.

He described Spirit Circle as a story that revolves around seven different lives, each taking place in a different era and setting.

According to Mizukami, the adaptation required an unusually large amount of background and setting material because each life needed its own world and circumstances.

He also pointed out the challenge of finding the right episode count. The story needed more than a standard single cour, but its length did not fit neatly into a conventional two-cour television format.

Mizukami expressed his gratitude to the production staff and to director Tatsuo Sato for overcoming these difficulties and bringing the manga to animation.

He also encouraged both longtime readers and newcomers to follow the anime through to its conclusion.

Anna Nagase Performs the Ending Theme for the First Time as a Solo Singer

Another major announcement concerns the anime’s ending theme.

The song is titled “Koko ga Donna Sekai Demo” (No Matter What Kind of World This Is) and will be performed by Anna Nagase, who voices Kouko Ishigami.

The track was written specifically for Spirit Circle and features a grand musical arrangement with an expressive melody that changes in tone and intensity.

Its lyrics and atmosphere reflect the anime’s themes of reincarnation, emotional connections, cruelty, affection, and the possibility of finding light even after repeated suffering.

For Nagase, the song marks her first solo singing performance.

She explained that she was immediately drawn to the song’s quiet but passionate words, particularly its imagery of nameless prayers hidden within the cycle of life and light appearing again through darkness.

She also described the emotional contradictions at the heart of the story: its world can be ruthless, yet the characters remain lovable.

Nagase approached the performance with these conflicting emotions in mind and hopes listeners will enjoy the song alongside the anime’s distinctive atmosphere.

The ending theme is especially meaningful because it connects the voice actress’s work as Kouko with the emotional themes of the story itself.

Original Manga: Spirit Circle Reaches Its 10th Anniversary

The original Spirit Circle manga was written and illustrated by Satoshi Mizukami.

It began serialization in Shonen Jump’s Young King Ours magazine in 2012 and concluded in 2016. The completed story was collected into six tankōbon volumes.

The anime announcement arrived in the year marking 10 years since the manga’s completion, making it a special milestone for readers who have followed the series since its original publication.

The franchise has also achieved more than 800,000 copies in cumulative circulation, including print and digital editions.

Mizukami is known for creating stories that combine imaginative concepts with emotional character development. His works often explore unusual worlds, complex relationships, and characters who must confront difficult moral choices.

Some of his other notable manga include Lucifer and the Biscuit Hammer and Sengoku Youko, both of which have also received anime adaptations.

For readers who have not yet experienced Spirit Circle, the six-volume format offers a completed story that can be explored before or alongside the television adaptation.

Spirit Circle Anime Release Date and Episode Count

The television anime will begin broadcasting and streaming in December 2026.

The production team has confirmed that the series will consist of 18 episodes.

An 18-episode run is notable because many modern television anime are produced in 12- or 13-episode seasons. The additional episodes should provide more room for the story’s different reincarnations and the emotional developments connecting them.

However, the exact premiere date, Japanese television channels, and individual streaming platforms have not yet been announced.

The official announcement confirms a December launch, but viewers should wait for further updates before assuming a specific broadcast day or service.

Spirit Circle Brings an Epic Reincarnation Story to Television

The upcoming Spirit Circle anime is one of the notable December 2026 adaptations, combining Satoshi Mizukami’s intricate reincarnation fantasy with an 18-episode television production.

Its story follows two souls whose conflict continues across multiple lives, raising questions about revenge, responsibility, forgiveness, and the meaning of identity. The journey of Fuuta and Kouko is not simply about discovering what happened in the past. It is also about understanding how those experiences shape the present and whether the future can be different.

The newly released teaser visual and first PV provide a glimpse of the series’ dramatic atmosphere, while the main cast brings together Kazuki Ura, Anna Nagase, Eri Yukimura, and Yuichi Nakamura.

The anime also carries special significance as the final directorial work of Tatsuo Sato. With assistant director Kentaro Mizuno and the production team completing the project while preserving Sato’s vision, the series represents an important final contribution from a respected filmmaker.

With 18 episodes planned, viewers can look forward to exploring the different live-action settings and emotional connections that make the original manga distinctive.

Whether you are a longtime reader of Satoshi Mizukami’s work or discovering Spirit Circle for the first time, this December’s adaptation promises a thoughtful journey through the cycle of reincarnation.
