A new Gundam film debuts in first place, ‘Project Sekai the Movie’ in second place, and anime gets off to a rocket start

Mobile Suit Gundam qux -Beginning- debuted at number one in the nationwide movie attendance rankings for January 17th (Friday), 18th (Saturday), and 19th (Sunday).

This work is a re-creation of some episodes of Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuX, a collaboration between Studio Khara and Sunrise, for the theater. After meeting a war refugee girl, a high school girl living a peaceful life becomes involved in an illegal dueling competition.

The director is Kazuya Tsurumaki, who worked on Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time. Voice actors include Tomoyo Kurosawa, Yui Ishikawa, and Shimba Tsuchiya. In second place is Project Sekai: The Movie – A Broken World and Miku Who Can’t Sing, which is also making its debut, and the anime is off to a rocket start. An original story based on a rhythm adventure game featuring virtual singers, including Hatsune Miku, has been animated. A virtual singer who can no longer deliver her songs grows together with a singer who delivers her songs to the hearts of many audiences through street performances.

Directed by Hata Hiroyuki. The voice cast includes Fujita Saki, Shimoda Asami, Asakawa Yu, Haigou Meiko, Fuga Naoto, Noguchi Ruriko, and others. Pushed by the anime, “Grand Maison Paris” and “Cells at Work” dropped to 3rd and 4th place respectively. The only work to rise in the ranking this week was “366 Days” at 5th place, one rank up from last week. Another new work this week was “Muromachi Burai,” which debuted in 7th place.

This is a period drama action film adaptation of Naoki Prize-winning author Kakine Ryosuke’s “Muromachi Burai.” Set in the late Muromachi period, it depicts the man who was the first to cause an uprising and leave his mark on Japan, devastated by repeated famines and epidemics as a member of the samurai class. The director is Irie Yu, who directed “22 Years of Confessions…”. Starring Oizumi Yo, this is his first time performing in a full-scale sword fight scene. Co-stars include Nagao Kento, Emoto Akira, Kitamura Kazuki, Matsumoto Wakana, Endo Yuya, and Tsutsumi Shinichi. This week, films such as “Snow Flowers: Together,” “Under Ninja,” and “Goldfinger: A Huge Financial Fraud Case” will be released.
