ABEMA, a video streaming service aiming to innovate TV and develop itself as “the new future of television,” has announced the top five titles in its “2025 Summer New Anime Mid-Ranking. ” [1st to 5th Place] Huh…? The #1 New Release is awesome! Here are ABEMA’s “View and Comment Rankings” for summer anime (see results).
ABEMA independently compiled viewing data for new anime and sequels airing in July 2025 on its anime channel, covering approximately one month from the first episode or July premiere to the week of July 28th. What happened to the top five titles in the “View Ranking” and “Comment Ranking,” calculated from the average number of views and comments per episode during real-time broadcasts and on-demand streaming? First, the top five in terms of number of views are, in order from bottom to top, “I Was Reincarnated as the Seventh Prince, So I’ll Carefreely Master Magic Season 2,” “Kaiju No. 8 Season 2,” “Takopi’s Original Sin,” “Dandadan Season 2,” and “The Summer When Light Died.” In the views category, the highly anticipated coming-of-age horror film “The Summer When Light Died” (original work: Mokumoku Ren) gained popularity.
The work’s unique worldview and breathtaking storyline, which centers around “Something” disguised as the deceased best friend of protagonist Yoshiki Tsujinaka, Hikaru Ido, depict how a supernatural phenomenon slowly corrodes everyday life, have attracted many viewers and received a steady stream of positive feedback. Coming in second place was the second season of “Dandadan,” a wildly popular occult battle and coming-of-age story originally published on the manga app “Shonen Jump+” (Shueisha), (original story by Tatsuyuki Shin ), and coming in third place was the shocking “Tacopi’s Original Sin” (original story by Taizan 5), also published on “Shonen Jump+.”
The six-episode series “Tacopi’s Original Sin,” which tells the shocking story of Tacopi, a “Happy Alien” who descends to Earth to spread happiness, and a human girl named Kuze Shizuka, attracted a flood of comments upon its broadcast. The ranking of comments, from fifth place onward, was dominated by “Welcome to the Exiles’ Diner!”, “The Summer the Light Died,” “What’s Wrong with Detectives These Days?”, “My Dress-Up Darling Season 2” and “Tacopi’s Original Sin” resulted in a slightly different lineup compared to the number of views.
A look at some of the comments made upon the premiere of the top-ranking works reveals that “Welcome to the Exiles’ Diner!”, a story about a protagonist who is expelled from a top-tier adventurer party and opens a diner as a chef, is a popular choice. ‘ (original work: Kimikawa Yuki) received comments such as, “The food animation is excellent,” and “Everyone must be hungry,” while ‘The Summer When the Light Died’ received comments such as, “It’s the perfect anime for summer,” “I’m glad to see a serious horror anime in the summer,” and “It was scary, but fun.” ‘What’s Up With These Detectives These Days?’ (original work: Igarashi Masakuni ) , a comedy about an older man who was once in the spotlight as a famous high school detective, and his beautiful (self-proclaimed) high school girl assistant, received comments such as, “I’m glad Sugita (Tomokazu) looks like he’s having fun,” “I spit out my coke at the end,” and “No, I can’t get anything into him (I mean that as a compliment lol).”
The sequel to the hugely popular series, ‘My Dress-Up Darling Season 2’ (original work: Fukuda Shinichi) received comments such as, “Marin is so cute,” and “Let’s just go out already!”, and ‘Takopi’s Original Sin’ received comments such as, “Takopi is so cute,” “I heard it was a pleased story,” and “My emotions are all messed up.” The top works in the “ABEMA Summer 2025 Anime Interim Ranking” mentioned above are currently being broadcast on ABEMA’s anime channel.
