The last weekend of July was another weak box office for North American cinemas. Although all of the Top 10 films again made more than $1 million at the box office, the cumulative total of Top 10 films was the lowest in two months.
At the top of the list is Warner Bros.’ superhero anime “DC Go for it! Super Pets.” The box office revenue was 23 million dollars, but the massive budget of 90 million dollars has not been recovered. The film is a family sci-fi movie featuring a superpowered dog, Crypto, who rescues the kidnapped Superman. Jared Stern, the screenwriter of “Lego Batman The Movie,” is co-directing with Sam Levine. In the duo of “Jumanji: His Welcome to the Jungle,” Dwayne Johnson, also in charge of production, and Kevin Hart participate as voice actors and form a tag again.
Meanwhile, Universal’s suspense thriller NOPE entered its second week and was down 58% from last weekend. It opened in slightly larger theaters, grossing $18.5 million and taking second place. It grossed $80 million at the box office, surpassing its budget of $68 million in its second week. Sony’s mystery thriller “Where the Crawdads Sing” continued to do well, earning $7.5 million at the box office, making it No. 6.
New to the Top 10 is Focus Features’ Vengeance. This comedy thriller is directed and written by B.J. Novak (“Inglourious Basterds”) and stars as a radio host who unravels a murder mystery involving a past affair. Produced by Jason Blum of “Black Phone” and produced the theme song “No Time To Die” for “007 No Time To Die”, Billy won the Best Original Song Award at the 94th Academy Awards. Eilish’s older brother Phineas O’Connell handled the music. It grossed $1.7 million at the box office, reaching number 10.
