What your family and yourself want: End of life. Mito Aki City has produced an educational animation video, “Natural end-of-life care – Facility Edition” (14 minutes), with the theme of “Relief”. It was released on YouTube’s video posting site to coincide with End of Life Day (November 30th).
This is a sequel to the “At-Home Edition” produced last year, and viewers are encouraged to watch, saying, “The number of people living alone and caring for older people will continue to increase. I want them to consider how they will spend their final moments in a facility.” (Kazuki Ura)
The anime begins with an 87-year-old woman moving into a particular nursing home. Her broken bones left her in a wheelchair, but her son, who lives with her, has been a shut-in for over 20 years due to depression.
This was because she could not expect nursing care at home.
One year later, the woman suffered a broken bone again and was bedridden, and the doctor met with her son to confirm the next course of action. When the son explained that cardiopulmonary resuscitation is difficult in old age and that it is a life-prolonging measure that can be painful if left to the medical field, he naturally said, “Her mother said, “Don’t give her tube feedings.” I want to be cared for at the end of my life. The story goes like this: After half a month, a woman takes her last breath.
Erika Fujita, a public health nurse in charge of the story, said, “While many people wish to spend their final moments at home, the reality is that many people do not have relatives nearby who can care for them. “I want people to think of it as a form of intention.”
There is also an explanatory video (11 minutes) by Dr. Saori Ogi, a medical practitioner who provided the voices and cooperated in the production, and Dr. Shun Matoba of Aki Prefectural General Hospital. As the trilogy’s final part, next year, we are planning a “hospital chapter” in which 80% of the citizens die.
