Even if you forget the face, you always remember the promise. Goku from ‘Dragon Ball’ and Chi-Chi’s unexpected ‘one-match marriage’ was made possible by innocence and sincerity.

It’s so typical of Goku that he assumes it’s food when he hears he’s getting something. Son Goku’s (voiced by Masako Nozawa) wife, Chi-Chi (voiced by Mayumi Sho), is known as a dedicated educational mother. Still, their marriage was so shocking and quick that even viewers at the time were surprised, asking, “Is that even possible!?”

Goku grew into a tall young man and participated in the 23rd Tenkaichi Budokai. During the preliminary round, Goku was called out to by a beautiful girl he had never met. She seemed to know Goku, but after staring at him for a while, he still couldn’t remember who she was and discourteously asked, “Who are you? You? You? You,” which made the beautiful girl angry.

After the preliminary rounds were over and the matchups for the main tournament were decided as if by some twist of fate, Goku’s first opponent was the beautiful girl who had spoken to him earlier. Since he had requested not to reveal her name, Goku had no recollection of her even when the match began, and as he fought, he repeatedly asked her rude questions, such as “Have we met before?”

The beautiful girl became enraged, saying, “You don’t even know a girl’s heart! I’ve been waiting for you forever!” and then revealed a shocking promise: “You’ll take me as your bride!” At that moment, the martial arts hall was filled with murmurs, but Goku didn’t seem to get it and asked Krillin (CV: Tanaka Mayumi), “What’s a bride? Tell me!”

Goku understood Krillin’s explanation a little, but he still didn’t remember his promise. The beautiful girl sets a condition for Goku, who doesn’t recognize her: She would reveal her true identity if he defeated her.

Goku said something that seemed likely to anger her again, “Thank goodness! I thought I’d have to live forever with someone whose name I don’t even know,” but he easily won the match, generating a shock wave with his fist and blowing the beautiful girl out of the ring.

As promised, the beautiful girl revealed her true identity as King Bull’s daughter, Chi-Chi, and even Goku was surprised that she remembered his name. He then remembered that when he was a boy on Mount Frying Pan, Chi-Chi asked him to come and marry her when he was a little older, and Goku replied, “I don’t know what you’re talking about, but if you give it to me, I’ll come and get it!”

Goku seemed to think it was food or something, but a promise is a promise, and he publicly proposed to her surprisingly casually, saying, “Well, let’s get married!” While Goku’s friends were stunned by this “one-game marriage” rather than a “zero-day marriage,” the audience cheered.

Seeing Goku being kissed on the cheek, his best friend Krillin sheds tears and congratulates him…or so you’d think, but instead, he’s raging with jealousy, shouting, “Ah! That’s not fair! That’s not fair! That’s not fair! Goku…that’s not fair!”

Twelve years after Goku’s wedding, Krillin married Android 18, a beautiful woman who drove viewers wild with jealousy. You never know what life will bring.
