Megumi’s reappearance is what will determine Jujutsu Kaisen’s conclusion—not Sukuna’s defeat

As Ryomen Sukuna and Jujutsu Kaisen engage in increasingly fierce combat, the action-packed drama never stops. The Demon King revealed yet another surprise maneuver just as it appeared that the Jujutsu High sorcerers had the upper hand.

He opened his Domain, Malevolent Shrine, despite taking eight Black Flashes from Yuji Itadori and having his recovery stopped. Even with its 99-second duration and incompleteness, it caused significant harm to his opponents—including severing Yuji’s left foot. He astounded the audience by preparing his Fuga, or Fire Arrow, as the chapter came to a close.

There’s a persistent worry that Megumi Fushiguro’s storyline isn’t finished despite these changes. Given the harm Yuji has caused, Megumi is probably going to escape at some time. That supports the tenable idea that Megumi’s return—rather than Sukuna’s defeat—will be the decisive factor in Jujutsu Kaisen.

Jujutsu Kaisen: Megumi, not Sukuna, will decide how the series ends.

The upgraded version of Megumi Fushiguro

First off, it’s fair to argue that Megumi’s character is evolving significantly despite her state of vegetative state. According to Atsuya Kusakabe (chapter 258), Yuji’s rapid growth can be attributed in part to Sukuna’s use of Special Grade Jujutsu and past habitation of his body. Because of this, his body retains everything and can use it more quickly.

Similar to Yuji, Sukuna has also operated inside Megumi’s body, if not more so. But as Megumi was always his objective, he used a significant portion of his powers as soon as he took control. He almost went all out against Gojo Satoru, too.

Megumi’s body would essentially be imprinted with incredibly advanced Jujutsu as well. Not to add, Megumi has always been said to possess absurd talent but be limited by his mental limitations. For this reason, he is getting an even bigger bonus from Sukuna than Yuji did.

Sukuna has revealed his true form and Megumi’s present body contains abilities such as barrierless Domain, enhanced Ten Shadows, taming Mahoraga, Reverse Cursed Technique (RCT), Black Flash, and much more.

How it relates to Megumi choosing the finale of the series

There needs to be a valid cause for Megumi to acquire such powerful skills in light of the events of the novel. It can’t be for nothing, knowing author Gege Akutami, that the boy with the dark hair has been given access to what might be the greatest Jujutsu spell ever discovered.

It’s possible that Megumi will be set free in the end and the fusion will occur as Kenjaku intended. Once more, according to Kenjaku, the combination will produce something that transcends Cursed Energy (CE). The remaining sorcerers will then unite to battle the beast, as it happens.

Alternatively, Megumi might become bad once she’s liberated. We already know that the protection of his sister Tsumiki is the only motivation behind all of his acts. Considering that they had only each other for support, he further transformed into a sorcerer and sided with Gojo to make sure his sister would be protected.

Megumi’s intense protectiveness toward his sister at the Culling Games was a hint that he was headed down a dark road and prepared to kill anyone who stood in his way. Furthermore, he disregarded Reggie Star’s accurate prophecy that Kenjaku would “drop a bomb” on the globe during their battle.

Now, let’s talk about the possible cause of Megumi’s deviance. Once more, the boy with the dark hair prevailed in the fight against Reggie Star and was thereafter “cursed.” Before he passes away foolishly, Reggie instructed Megumi to play with fate in his final words.

This also proved to be the case. After taking control of his body, Sukuna killed Gojo and his sister, with whom he had a strong relationship, and is currently engaged in combat with his allies. Megumi was shattered by Yuji’s soul-shattering attacks the previous time he was seen, and she didn’t want to fight or even survive.

In other words, fate has truly played tricks on him by taking everything away from him, killing his desire to live, and then (perhaps) making him return to see it all. By letting the merger happen and accepting what it entailed, he could let out his rage.

Last Words
Anyway, this is just conjecture. Nobody in the vicinity genuinely knows what writer Gege Akutami is working on next. However, there may be certain facts that are known for sure.

When Megumi comes back, Sukuna will be working through his body, giving him powers that are much above those of any sorcerer. Furthermore, even if he manages to trigger the merger, his gains may be limited because CE and Jujutsu magic may be eliminated.

This is merely a theory that could change as the plot develops. The conclusion of Gege Akutami might go either way: either Megumi and his allies defeat the merger beast, or Gege Akutami gets released and makes a comeback as the series’ last boss. But Megumi is probably the one who will ultimately determine the fate of the series.
