In line with the release of the movie “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM” on January 26th (Friday), “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED” and “Mobile Suit Gundam” will be shown for seven consecutive weeks at BS12 Twelve “Sunday Anime Theater” from January to February. Seven special editions of SEED DESTINY will be broadcast.
The first special edition, “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED Special Edition Battlefield in the Void,” will be broadcast on January 14th (Sunday), the starting point for the series. It will be broadcast in the HD remastered version screened in theaters in 2023.
“Mobile Suit Gundam SEED” began broadcasting in October 2002 and has entered the 21st century. This will be the first Gundam series. “∀ Gundam,” which was broadcast from 1999 to 2000 as the previous work in the series, was directed by Yoshiyuki Tomino himself, the creator of “Gundam,” and encompassed the last series with the concept of “black history.”
It marked a break in the 20th century’s “Gundam” (the term “black history” currently used comes from this work). Based on this, “Gundam SEED” aims to be the “Gundam” of the 21st century, that is, the “standard of “Gundam” in a new era.” If you think about it, the title “SEED” may also contain the intention to “let a new Gundam sprout from here and grow it.”
This is also the first time that “Mobile Suit” has been added to the title of a Gundam that does not depict a story set in the “Universal Century.” From here, you can understand the high expectations placed on this work as a restart for the series.
This work lived up to those expectations, was enthusiastically received by anime fans then, and certainly opened the door to “Gundam in the 21st century.” Emotions clash in the battle between mobile suits Set against the background of the conflict between the “Coordinators (ZAFT Army)” who have undergone genetic adjustment to have muscular bodies and clear minds, and the ordinary humans “Naturals (Earth Union).”
The story of this work continues to unfold. Eleven months have passed since the armed conflict between ZAFT and the Earth Alliance began. Kira Yamato, a young coordinator living in the neutral colony Heliopolis, gets caught up in an attack by the ZAFT army, plotting to take over five Gundams developed by the Earth Alliance. Amid the war, Kira reunites with her former best friend, Athrun Zala, who has become a ZAFT soldier.
Kira escapes the predicament by boarding the Strike Gundam, and due to circumstances, he and his best friends decide to board the Earth Alliance’s new battleship, Archangel. This way, Kira and Athrun meet on the battlefield as enemies without each other’s wishes. Expressing the emotional conflict that arises from the relationships between Kira, Athrun, and the people surrounding them in mobile suit battles, especially battles between Gundams, creates intense drama and catharsis.
