Pixar Animation Studios’ original animation series “Win or Lose” will be exclusively distributed on Disney’s official video streaming service “Disney+” from February 19. The key visual and the official trailer have been released, and the director has also commented on the work’s origins.
“Win or Lose” is an entirely original animation series from Pixar that depicts the eight members of the mixed junior high school softball team “Pickles” preparing for a big tournament one week away with various thoughts. It consists of eight episodes, each depicting the same week from multiple perspectives, such as players, their families, and umpires. It is a novel structure that represents the perspectives of various people surrounding one event from multiple angles, such as children who seem to lack confidence, overprotective parents, and a referee troubled by love.
The production team of this work is made up of creators who have colored the lineage of Pixar Studios. The film is written, directed, and executive produced by Cary Hobson (producer of “Luca”) and Michael Yates (story artist of “Soulful World”) and produced by David Lally, who worked on visual effects in “Coco” and “Finding Dory.” The executive producers are Pete Docter, who has won three Academy Awards for his work, including “Inside Out,” and Andrew Stanton, who has won two Academy Awards and was the original creator of the “Toy Story” series and director of “Finding Dory,” and Lindsay Collins, who produced “The Red Panda and Me.”
The music by Ramin Djawadi, who was nominated for a Grammy for “Iron Man,” which colors the drama, is also attracting attention. The key visuals released this time are a stark contrast to the pop image of the first visual and seem to express the emotions of each character, such as anxiety and worries.
The anxious expressions of the characters are impressive. In addition, the trailer, which was also released, depicts the players’ anxieties and failures humorously while asking the viewers what “winning or losing” means, which is the title and theme of the film, with lines such as “When someone wins, someone else loses” and “No matter what the outcome is, you all win.”
Will they be able to face the anxiety and impatience that assails them and win the game of “life”? Anticipation is building for the story of the struggle for victory told from the perspectives of eight unique players, their coaches, and their families. Michael Yates and Carrie Hobson, the screenwriters, directors, and executive producers, also commented on the film. Carrie Hobson spoke passionately about the world of sports and her passion for putting it into a story, saying, “I’ve played softball since I was a child, and that experience inspired us to think that softball was the perfect subject for this story. It was an opportunity to create a truly special worldview.
The world of sports has many different sides, and I love all of it. Sports can bring out the best and the worst in people. Even the calmest people can get emotional, and the result doesn’t seem to matter when it comes to winning or losing. It feels like that’s all that matters. We thought it was the perfect stage to depict the subject we love.” According to Michael Yates, highlighting a different perspective was born from his daily life at the office. “Carrie and I worked together on Toy Story 4. We talked a lot about what was happening in the film, what was happening in the world, current events, and the news. We always have different reactions and interpretations of the same things.
One person might say, ‘That was great!’ The other might say, ‘No, that was terrible.’ We realized that our own experiences influence our perception of things. We aimed to tell a story that tells those lessons,” he said.
