The suspense manga The Psychic Battle, by Toshiaki Iwashiro, which remains popular even 15 years after its conclusion and was nominated three times in Animejapan’s “Manga to be Animeized” poll, is being adapted into an anime. One day, high school freshman Ageha Yashina picks up a “red telephone card” left at a public phone.

A few days later, her childhood friend and classmate, Sakurako Amemiya, who had the same telephone card, disappears. To find her, Ageha contacts the “Secret Society Siren,” rumored to be the mastermind behind a series of “spirited abductions” occurring nationwide. And so begins a life-threatening game.

The teaser visual depicts a boy named Ageha Yashina holding a red telephone card, the heroine Sakurako Amemiya wielding a sword, and the work’s iconic item, a public telephone, in a desolate world with a mysterious tower looming overhead. It’s a serious-sounding illustration.

The teaser PV is composed of live-action footage, strikingly showing a public telephone booth floating in the night, while cityscapes and images of the work’s setting overlap, creating a visual that evokes the work, as if the real world and another world intersect.

The film is directed by Katsumi Ono, known for the “Senki Zesshō Symphogear” series. The series is composed by Yoshida Shin, character design by Okuma Shiro, music by Omama Takashi, Saiki Tatsuhiko, and Kanematsu Shu, and animation is handled by Satelight, the studio behind the “Aquarion” and “Macross” series.

The voice actors for the protagonist, Ageha Yashina, are Yasuda Rikuya and Amemiya Sakurako, respectively. Yasuda commented, “I received the notice that I passed the audition at home, and I was so glad that I was in an environment where I could shout out loud that I was able to sing out loud. From that moment until today, I have been moved by the TV anime “PSYREN,” and I want to share it with everyone right away.

Nearly 15 years after the original work’s conclusion, I will be storming through the world of “PSYREN” together with Ageha!!!!” Kazama commented, “Amamiya has a cool appearance, so much so that she’s nicknamed the ‘Ice Queen,’ but in reality, she’s a character who hides a variety of emotions deep inside.

During the recording, I gave my all, thinking about how to confront her inner self and express her charm. Please look forward to the broadcast!” Original author Iwashiro commented, “I’m happy to be able to tell my parents and family something I wasn’t able to do about 15 years ago. Young editors and anime production staff greeted me with blazing, passionate eyes, saying they loved Siren and read it when they were teenagers, and now they’re adults… I’m so touched and grateful that they’re involved in the anime adaptation.

I hope everyone can enjoy Siren! I was also involved in various aspects of the script. I’m really looking forward to seeing the moving and talking Ageha characters in action.” Furthermore, to commemorate the anime adaptation, all volumes of the original manga will be reprinted. The first seven episodes are available for free at digital bookstores for a limited time. The anime “PSYREN” will be broadcast in 2026.
