*Due to the nature of this theme, the following text contains descriptions that may contain “spoilers” for those who have not yet watched the work. Please be careful when reading. “Dandadan” is an occult battle and youth story based on the manga by Tatsuyuki Shin, which is currently being serialized in Shueisha’s manga magazine app “Shonen Jump +” and has a total circulation of over 10 million copies.
Momo, a high school girl born into a family of spiritualists, and her classmate Okarun, an occult maniac, encounter an overwhelming supernatural phenomenon that transcends comprehension. With the power of a curse and the hidden power they gain from this encounter, they challenge the paranormal phenomena that approach them, while also becoming embroiled in a fateful love affair.
The first season of the TV anime, in which Momo, also known as Ayase Momo, is played by Shion Wakayama, and Okarun, also known as Takakura Ken, is broadcast from October to December 2024 and gained popularity.
The second season will be directed by Abel Gongora along with Yamashiro Fuuga, and animation production will continue to be handled by Science SARU. In episode 13, Momo is enjoying an open-air bath, but is attacked by the men of the Kito family. The one who saves her from such a pinch is Turbo Granny, who sneaks into Momo’s bag and follows her.
The second season begins with Momo in a pinch, and on social media, there were comments like, “She’s already sexy!”, “Momo, run!” and “Turbo Baba, you’re amazing!”. When I asked Turbo Baba about Jiji’s house, she said, “That house is no good. It’s soaked in too much human blood.” Meanwhile, at Jiji’s house, Okarun, and Jiji were panicking because they had made a hole in the wall. Beyond that was a hidden room with talismans plastered all over the ceiling, walls, and floor.
The two of them decided not to go inside and wait for Momo to come home, but… At that moment, the intercom suddenly rang, and Jiji opened the front door, thinking it was Momo. Standing outside were the members of the Kito family, including Naki. Jiji’s house was rented from the Kito family, and they were exempt from paying rent while his parents were hospitalized.
The members of the Kito family started relaxing at Jiji’s house, and they began questioning him about why he wasn’t at home… Meanwhile, Momo encounters a mysterious head priest doing an upside-down triangle at a shrine dedicated to Tsuchinoko.
The priest tells her that this town has offered children to the “giant snake” as offerings for generations to suppress volcanic eruptions. When Momo returns home thinking about revisiting the city with Okarun, who likes occult stories, she finds Okarun and Jiji in tatters after being beaten up by the Kito family. “We’ve finally got all the offerings. Let’s start the festival,” says Naki.
Momo resists but is blown away by Naki’s overwhelming power. At that time, she breaks through the wall and enters the room with the talismans… Momo is curious about the true identity of Naki, who has such strong powers, and asks Turbo Granny, who tells her she’s “just a strong old woman.”
This elicits comments from viewers such as “Just a strong old woman, lol” and “Isn’t she a monster or something?” According to Naki’s story, it was the Kito family who had been offering to the giant snake. Moreover, they claim that the location of Jiji’s house has been used as an “altar” for offerings. Okarun, Momo, and Jiji fall into the depths of the room with the members of the Kito family, getting all tangled up.
There, they believe that the “giant snake” once thought to be a superstition exists… but according to Turbo Granny, “It’s a ‘Kuragar.'” Okarun also seems to have seen it before, and according to his favorite book, “Poe”, it is “a giant man-eating earthworm UMA that lives in the Gobi Desert”. It is usually about 1.5 to 2 meters long, but because the Kito family has been offering it for 200 years, it has become huge.
The three run away to avoid being eaten, but Okarun and Momo are exposed to a mysterious light and start acting strangely… On social media, comments such as “Oh, it’s a worm! Lol, “Have you been worshiping worms all this time? Lol, “What happened to Okarun?!” and “I want to know what happens next!” were posted.
