The cake prepared in front of Furiren, who is celebrating her birthday, is in a completely different state from the manga version.
The anime “Frieren: Beyond Journey’s End” is currently being streamed all at once and is based on the manga of the same name, which is serialized in “Weekly Shonen Sunday” by Yamada Kanehito and Abe Tsukasa. Set in a world “after” the Demon King was defeated, the story follows Furiren (CV: Tanezaki Atsumi), an elf magician who has lived for over 1,000 years, as she goes on a “journey to get to know people” with her apprentice Fern (CV: Ichinose Kana ) and warrior Stark (CV: Kobayashi Chiaki ).
The original manga has won numerous awards and received tremendous support and acclaim, with over 22 million copies in circulation as of the 13th volume already published. The TV anime, which aired from September 2023 to March 2024, became a huge hit, with many related words trending on X (formerly Twitter) after each episode.
The production of the second season of the anime has also been announced. In episode 18, there was a scene where Frieren was celebrated for her birthday by Fern and Stark. On the banquet table was a giant whole cake. Dozens of candles were lined up on it. Frieren blew out all the candles in one go. Frieren’s profile is known to be that she has lived for over 1,000 years, but her exact age has not been revealed. Still, she is an Efuru, a long-lived species with a completely different lifespan from humans, and this cake was probably an attempt to celebrate Frieren as best as possible.
At the beginning of the episode, there is a scene where Fern calls Frieren “an old magician,” and Frieren gets sulky, but that may have been a prelude. In the original manga, five candles were placed on the birthday cake in front of Frieren.
The birthday cake, unique to Frieren, has caused a stir online, with comments such as “How old is she?” and “Just how old is Frieren’s birthday lol?”. Many also commented that there are significantly more candles than in the original, saying, “There were a lot more candles, lol” and “The number is incredible; it made me laugh.”
