Marking a significant milestone, the film was released on November 17, 2023, in honor of the 100th anniversary of Mizuki’s birth. This is a momentous occasion as it’s the first GeGeGe no Kitaro movie in 15 years, since GeGeGe no Kitaro: Japan Explodes!!, the fifth season of the TV anime aired in December 2008. The film delves into the story of Kitaro’s father (formerly Medama Oyaji) and Mizuki, revealing their untold tales for the first time.
The film was a success and a phenomenon, grossing over 2.7 billion yen. Its popularity soared even higher when it was honored with the Best Animation Award at the 47th Japan Academy Awards, sparking conversations and admiration among fans and critics alike.
