The new anime “Touken Ranbu Kai -Kouden: Burning Honnoji,” which is based on the screenplay of “Stage “Touken Ranbu” Kōden: Burning Honnoji,” will begin broadcasting in April. Teaser PV, visual, cast, and staff information have been announced.
In “Touken Ranbu ONLINE,” the player becomes a priest, and a famous sword transforms into a warrior. It is a simulation game where you lead a changed “swordsman” into battle. Since its launch in January 2015, it has successfully created a variety of media mixes, including anime, musicals, consumer games, stage plays, movies, and kabuki.
The stage play “Touken Ranbu,” premiered in 2016, is a popular series with 15 works performed. “Stage “Touken Ranbu” Fiction Story: Burning Honnoji” is the first work, and the story revolves around Fudou Yukimitsu, who is worn by Oda Nobunaga and given to Ranmaru Mori. Kenichi Suemitsu directed and wrote the script for the stage play. However, he was reportedly in charge of the series composition and script for the anime version.
The released teaser PV opens with Honnoji Temple engulfed in flames. Several sworders appeared, centering around swords related to Nobunaga Oda, and their thoughts and conflicts towards Nobunaga were told dramatically.
In addition, the teaser visual depicts the brave figures of the sworders with expressions full of determination, with Honnoji Temple in the background. Domenica is in charge of animation production. The director is Ryoya Ichikawa, the character designer is Mari Takada, and the music is by Ryunosuke Kasai.
The cast includes Kosuke Toriumi as Munechika Mikazuki, Tomoaki Maeno as Kunihiro Yamabagiri, Yuki Yasushi as Samonji Sozo, Daisuke Sakaguchi as Yukimitsu Fudo, and Aragaki as Hasebe Heshikiri, just like in the game “Touken Ranbu ONLINE.” Tarusuke and Seiichiro Yamashita, who played the role of Toshiro Yagen, were included. Comments have also arrived from Suemitsu and the six cast members.
Comment from Kenichi Suemitsu (series composition/screenplay): The game “Touken Ranbu ONLINE” will be adapted for the stage. More than seven years have passed since we continued to stage performances, groping in the dark, based on an original idea that did not reveal the detailed story. I counted 15 works so far. The work of delving into this vast and profound world has brought me many hardships and many new insights. I was surprised when I was told that the first part of the project, “Stage “Touken Ranbu” Kōden Moyuru Honnoji,” would be reconstructed and made into an anime. Is there any point in turning the stage version into an anime when there are already two anime projects ahead? I needed to face the fictional story again to find its meaning within myself, not just as an animated stage version but just as I faced the game to launch the stage version. We are honored to be able to share this with you as another Honmaru story.
Comments from Kosuke Toriumi (playing Munechika Mikazuki): My name is Kosuke Toriumi, and I play Munechika Mikazuki. I am thrilled and excited to participate in the new Touken Ranbu anime series and see Mikazuki Munechika in action for the first time in a while. I hope everyone will look forward to this series’s story and the sworders’s activities. I appreciate your support for “Touken Ranbu Kai -Kouden Burning Honnoji-.”
Comment from Tomoaki Maeno (Kunihiro Yamabagiri): I’m thrilled to see them in action again in the animation, and the foundation of this work, “Stage “Touken Ranbu” Kōden Burning Honnoji,” is one of the many stages. I have heard that many people say that it is imposing. It’s a theatrical story about a swordsman connected to Nobunaga who develops bonds through various conflicts and leads to growth. Kunihiro Yamanbagiri is no exception, as he continues on his path even though he is at a loss. I can’t help but feel warm when I see him go. Not only does it have to be enjoyed by everyone, but when you know the cast members who share the same aspirations in stage plays and musicals, you’ll notice that Kunihiro Yamanbagiri in the anime version is just as excellent. I went into the dubbing with a strong desire to make people think that way. Please look forward to it.
Comment from Yasuyuki (voice of Sozo Samonji): I had seen the play on which this anime is based. A strange feeling of emotion surrounded me as the words I had acted in came from the stage, and I thought to myself, “What would it be like if this story were to be told in an anime?” I was shocked. It is one of the most critical episodes related to Lord Oda Nobunaga, so in that sense, I am thrilled that it has been made into an anime. I think one of the appeals of anime is seeing the interactions between the sworders, so I hope that the world of Touken Ranbu will expand even further from here.
Comment from Daisuke Sakaguchi (playing Yukimitsu Fudo): This is an anime adaptation of the stage playTouken Ranbu” Koden: Burning Honnoji”! I often hear about anime being adapted into a stage play, but it’s the reverse this time. Although there were some tricky parts, I had fun thinking about combining the Fudou Yukimitsu I created and the Fudou Yukimitsu that Taizo Shiina cultivated on stage. I went into the set thinking I could use the pure, straightforward, unwavering character I have on stage while also adding my color. I’m proud of myself, and it turned out pretty good (lol).
The work retains the stage play’s quality while adding the anime’s fun aspects. Please look forward to it! Comment from Tarusuke Aragaki (Heshikiri Hasebe): I’m excited that Touken Ranbu will be adapted into a new anime. And I’m even more excited to be performing there! This time, the internal conflicts and changes of the swordsmen are deeply involved in the story, so I feel that their “hearts” are portrayed more delicately. The way they are portrayed makes us feel closer to them. Everyone watching can immerse themselves in the story from the perspective of a sword. Please enjoy it to the fullest!
Comments from Seiichiro Yamashita (voice of Toshiro Yagen): It’s been a while since I appeared in a Touken Ranbu anime. I’m happy to be able to fight alongside Toshiro Yagen again, and my blood boils with excitement. I had the opportunity to see “Koden” on stage before, and it was a truly remarkable experience. I’m happy to be able to relive that experience with “Mawari,” and I hope everyone will pay attention to the presentation and production that is unique to anime. From now on, we look forward to your continual support!
