by The broadcast date for the TV anime “The Brave Scum” has been set for January 2026. At the same time, information on the teaser PV and main staff has also been released.
The series was directed by Ushiro Shinji, and Kato Yoichi handled the series composition and scriptwriting. The two also directed and wrote the series for the anime “Yo-kai Watch.”
“The Hero’s Scum” has been adapted from a web novel, a doujinshi, and a commercial serialization into an anime. “The Hero’s Scum” is a web novel serialized by Rocket Shokai on the novel submission website Kakuyomu. It has received acclaim, including winning the Grand Prize in the Modern Action category at the 1st Kakuyomu Web Novel Contest.
A commercially serialized comic book version is currently being published on LEED Publishing’s manga website Comic Border. The comic book adaptation was started by Nakashima723, the illustrator, who signed a contract with Rocket Shokai and began production as an independent doujinshi.
The first volume of the doujinshi alone sold over 5,000 copies and was nominated for the Web Manga category at the Next Manga Awards in 2020 and 2021. Due to the popularity of the doujinshi, a commercial version with additional revisions began serialization on Comic Border on February 18, 2022. It took nearly 10 years since the original novel was published in 2016 for it to be adapted into an anime.
“The Scum of the Brave” depicts heroes hunting down villains from the underworld. “The Hero’s Scum” is set in mid-21st-century Tokyo. In the world of the story, a mafia member who became a demon king through surgery to enhance his ether (magical power) rules the underworld. Mafia hunting has become legalized, with bounty hunters and heroes fighting against the demon king. The story’s protagonist is a freelance hero named Yashiro.
The story depicts the supernatural action of Yashiro and three high school girls who aspire to become heroes and become his disciples. The production of the anime version was announced on March 15, 2025. It will be broadcast on Nippon Television and produced by OLM, the studio behind the anime series “Pokémon” and “The Apothecary Diaries.”

Among the prominent staff members announced this time are Ushiro Shinji as director and Kato Yoichi as series composition and scriptwriter. These two have also teamed up on the anime series “Yokai Watch” and “Magica Party,” and are known for working on several other comedy anime series aimed at children. Murakami Rika, who will be in charge of character design, has also worked as animation director on “My Hero Academia” and character design on “Zoids Wild.”
