This Spring’s New Isekai Anime: A Man Reborn as a Goblin

With popular shows like Demon Slayer and KonoSuba making their much-anticipated comebacks, the spring 2024 anime season is sure to be enormous.

However, the unique premise of one new series that debuted this season is already creating a lot of excitement. “Re: Monster” centers on Tomokui Kanata, a man who is fatally stabbed and awakens in a fantastical setting as Gobrou, a newborn goblin.

Within a genre in which heroes usually defeat goblins as low-level monsters, the protagonist of this program is reborn as one of these same creatures.

A new isekai (transported to another world) series from Studio Deen, producers of well-known anime like KonoSuba, Fate/Stay Night, and The Seven Deadly Sins, twists the genre by having its human protagonist reborn as a humble goblin instead of an overpowering hero.

Gobrou starts building up his abilities and going on hunts with Goblin Kichi, another powerful goblin baby. Afterward, Gobbi joins the two, making a trio that defeats progressively stronger creatures.

Gobrou quickly gains new skills by eating the prey they vanquish, which puts him on the path to maybe becoming an Overlord Goblin.

He still has human memories and senses, though, which causes some amusing mental conflicts with his new goblin physiology and instincts. Although he has an advantage due to his human brain, he will need to go above and beyond to survive in this hostile new environment.

There will be a lot of action in the series as Gobrou eats and kills greater enemies to gain power. However, it also seeks to explore some darker topics regarding the circumstances of Kanata’s death as a human, as well as draw humor from the absurdity of a human consciousness imprisoned in a goblin body.

“Re: Monster” is gaining a lot of excitement from isekai enthusiasts and could be the surprise smash of the spring. The show will debut on April 2 and be available for streaming on Crunchyroll.
