We are already in the middle of October. As the word “Seven Autumn Herbs” suggests, autumn is the season to see wild plants.
In recent years, people who are shy about love, don’t like conflict, and are gentle are sometimes called “herbivorous.” In anime, characters that fit the term “herbivorous” often appear. There are many types of herbivorous characters, such as those who are always passive, never expressing their desires, and eat grass. So, Anime! Anime! Conducted a reader survey titled “When you think of “herbivorous” characters?” We received responses from 102 people during the September 30th to October 4th survey period. The ratio of men to women was almost equal. The age group was mainly young people, about 30 percent under 19 years old and about 25 percent in their 20s.
Herbivorous girls of different types take the top two! First place goes to Hinata Hyuga from “NARUTO.” Her approval rating was about 14%. Hinata, a female ninja from the Hyuga clan, has often been portrayed as shy, with comments such as “She always supports Naruto from afar and is unable to express herself actively!” and “When she met Naruto again after a long time, she was so unprepared that she fainted. She’s so shy that she can’t even talk to the boy she likes.” Comments have been received praising her gentle personality, saying, “I think it’s wonderful that she doesn’t just unilaterally express her romantic feelings, but instead thinks about the other person’s feelings and watches over them, nurturing a sincere love.” Second place goes to Ryo Yamada from “Bocchi the Rock!”.
The difference between her and the top candidate was minimal. Ryo Yamada is the bassist for the four-member band, Yuzuru Band. This one isn’t a herbivore in the sense of being shy, but was ranked because “after buying the bass guitarist and vocalist Kita-chan had accidentally bought, he ran out of money and started eating grass” and “the scene where she says, ‘I’m going to live off the grass’ was shocking.” Some fans feel she lives a life befitting a musician, saying, “She’s a rich girl, but she’s always broke. She even owes money to a younger girl called Bocchi-chan, but she staves off hunger by eating grass from the roadside, a rock in a way.” 3rd place, 3rd place goes to Usayama Satoru from “Wonderful Pretty Cure!”. Her approval rating was about 6 percent.
Usayama Satoru, a second-year junior high school student, is a classmate of Inukai Iroha, also known as Cure Friendy. “He owns the rabbit Daifuku and is a calm second-year junior high school student. He knows much about animals and sometimes uses his knowledge to support the Pretty Cure girls. He has a slight crush on Iroha, but his shyness when it comes to love is a flaw,” and “He asked Iroha to keep it a secret because he didn’t want to cause her any trouble if other people found out about his crush on her.” His kindness is what draws people in. Some fans were surprised by the unexpected turn of events in the currently showing movie version, saying, “While he’s good at studying, he’s not so good at sports, so I was surprised to see how well he did in the movie.”
Here are some other comments! On Ichikawa Kyotaro from “My Dangerous Girlfriend,” he said, “It’s frustrating that he can’t move forward even though he knows that the heroine Yamada likes him. It’s also frustrating that he blushes so quickly!” “There are too many losing heroines! For Nukumizu Kazuhiko from “My Little Monster,” “Most guys want to date a cute girl, but Nukumizu-kun doesn’t think anything of it even when cute girls keep appearing around him, and he doesn’t show any romantic feelings, which makes him seem like a herbivore guy.”
For Yuuki Rito from “To Love-Ru,” “Not only does he have a hard time expressing his feelings to Haruna, whom he has feelings for, but he just panics when exciting happenings occur with many girls, and it ends there…a true herbivore!” For the Grass-Eating Man from “Yo-kai Watch,” “He’s a yokai who doesn’t like to stand out and constantly eats grass alone. It seems that the people he possesses become herbivores.
In the anime, the ending where he cuts down the whole grass field with a lawnmower was too horrifying,” there were also votes for non-human characters. In this survey, female characters came in at the top, but as the term “herbivore guy” suggests, male characters stood out in second place and below. There were also several characters related to animals that love vegetables.
