What is the most anticipated development?

The second season of the TV anime series “Funeral of Freiren” is scheduled to begin airing in January 2026, and many fans are eagerly awaiting its release. What developments await? Of course, readers of the original manga can predict the plot, but some are simply looking forward to the anime. I’ll avoid delving into the original manga and instead predict what the second season will bring.

The final episode of the first season of the anime ended with Freiren’s line, “I’ll be embarrassed when we meet again,” which also served as the subtitle. This likely hints at a reunion between viewers and not only Freiren, but also the main characters Fern and Stark. Furthermore, the same can be said for characters from the past, such as Himmel, Heiter, and Eisen. However, if we take this line at face value, it could suggest a reunion between Freiren and the characters they met during the First-Class Wizard Exam, potentially leading to their reappearance in the series. The key question here is how Freiren and his companions will encounter other characters during their journey.

The anime already provided hints about this. Freiren and his companions’ journey doesn’t involve rushing to their destination in a straight line. In fact, there are scenes where they stay in one place for an extended period of time, which angers Fern.

This means that other characters can catch up with or surpass them. Considering this, it’s not surprising that they could meet at any time, as long as they don’t stay in one place. So, let’s consider the characters who appeared in the First-Class Wizard Exam and what kind of reunions are possible. The conversations up to this point contain hints of this.

The first characters to be sifted out here are those who failed the First-Class Wizard Exam. These include Lavine and Kanne, who were in Freiren’s party during the first exam, as well as Richter and Laofen, who were in Denken’s party. There’s a clear answer to this question: in the Northern Highlands, where Freiren and her companions are heading, they must be accompanied by a First-Class Wizard.

In other words, anyone who does not have the qualifications to be a first-class wizard cannot set foot there. Of course, they may appear alongside characters who are qualified as first-class wizards. Furthermore, there will be no problem if they pass the next first-class wizard exam, which will be held three years from now. Looking at the journey of Freiren and his companions so far, it will take many more years, so it is possible. However, it may not be feasible in time for the second season of this anime. So let’s take a look back, focusing on the first-class wizards.
