An exhibition of the all-new TV anime based on Rumiko Takahashi’s popular manga ” Urusei Yatsura,” entitled “TV Anime ‘Urusei Yatsura’ Exhibition,” opened on October 2nd at the Matsuya Ginza Event Square on the 8th floor (Chuo-ku, Tokyo). In addition to valuable setting materials from the TV anime, life-size figures of Lum and other items are on display.
The exhibition runs until October 14th. Before the event, an opening ceremony was held on October 1st. Sumire Uesaka, the voice actress for Lum, and Shinya Arino of the comedy duo Yoiko, the exhibition’s official supporter, appeared. Arino commented on the exhibition, “It was exciting. As soon as you enter, there is a history of Urusei Yatsura, and Ataru is introduced as an ‘unrivaled high school girl.’
It was hard to say that nowadays, and I wanted to have a predatory guy like that, so I started watching. The sound of the black telephone ringing—if you’re over 40—will make you think, ‘Oh, that’s a nostalgic sound,’ so it’s immersive. It’s also interesting to read the setting materials and behind-the-scenes stories of the staff.
Uesaka commented on the exhibition’s highlights: “It’s gorgeous. The setting materials include expressions that viewers don’t get to see, the directors’ particular points, and comments from the cast. And the best part is that as you walk through the exhibition, you’re greeted by a life-size Lum. She’s so cute it takes your breath away, and I can’t wait for many people to see it.”
Uesaka also shared an episode with the original author, Takahashi, saying, “I met Takahashi-sensei at a dinner party when the recording was about to begin. I was nervous and drank about a bottle and a half of wine. I thought I’d be able to speak well once I was drunk, but no matter how much I drank, I remained nervous. However, he was kind and told me, ‘I’m looking forward to Urusei Yatsura,’ so I thought, ‘Okay! I’ll do my best!'”
