“The Rising of the Shield Hero” is an alternate-world fantasy based on the novel by Aneko Yusagi, which was serialized on the novel submission site “Let’s Become a Novelist” and published by “MF Books.” The story follows Iwatani Naofumi, a university student who is summoned to another world as the “Shield Hero,” one of the four holy heroes wielding the sword, spear, bow, and shield, and how he rises from the ashes of losing everything.
The TV anime aired three seasons: Season 1 from January to June 2019, Season 2 from April to June 2022, and Season 3 from October to December 2023. Season 4, which began in July 2025, concluded with the 12th episode, which aired on September 24, 2025. The decision to produce Season 5 was announced with the release of a teaser video during the C-part of Season 4’s final episode, “Return of Destiny.”
The footage showed a mysterious figure seated on a throne, Naofumi and his companions fighting in a cloud of dust, and Naofumi himself sporting a look of anguish. An ultra-teaser visual for Season 5 was also unveiled, depicting the Phoenix that Naofumi and his friends have been preparing for battle with.
Anticipation is building for how the Shield Hero will face the Phoenix as the battle against it approaches. Upon the decision to produce Season 5, original author Aneko Yusagi, character designer Seira Minami, and director Iwato each offered congratulatory comments. It was also revealed that KADOKAWA’s first global game project for PC and smartphones will be based on the TV anime series “The Rising of the Shield Hero.”

Seriously… I was writing the first four volumes of the book, hoping it would be adapted into an anime, and before I knew it, it had grown so much. I still feel like I’m dreaming. Once again, this is all thanks to everyone involved with The Hero of the Shield Hero.
