Pop-up shops from Madhouse, the production studio behind the anime “Funeral of Freiren,” will open in Tokyo and Osaka starting Friday, December 5. Newly drawn visuals and information on merchandise for sale have been released.
“Funeral of Freiren,” a manga by Yamada Kanehito (original story) and Abe Tsukasa (illustrations), is currently being serialized in “Weekly Shonen Sunday” (Shogakukan). Set in a world “after” a hero and his party defeated the Demon King, the story follows the journey of Freiren, a magician who has lived for over a thousand years and who defeated the Demon King alongside the hero, and the new people she meets.
The story unfolds in a unique timeline “after the Demon King’s defeat,” and features heart-wrenching drama and dialogue, battles with magic and swords, and humor that will have you laughing out loud. The currently on-sale comic series has sold over 32 million copies worldwide and is gaining popularity.
The second season of the TV anime “Funeral of Freiren” (animation production: Madhouse), based on the much-talked-about manga, will begin airing on Friday nights at 11 pm on Nippon Television’s nationwide network of 30 stations, on “FRIDAY ANIME NIGHT,” starting January 16, 2026.
The first season of “Funeral of Freiren,” which aired in 2023, was the memorable first series to air on Nippon Television’s nationwide anime slot “FRIDAY ANIME NIGHT,” or “Furaani” for short, every Friday night, and was the launch of the new time slot. Fans and viewers of all ages and genders were glued to their TVs every Friday night, watching Freiren and her friends’ journey. And starting January 16, 2026, Freiren and her friends will return every Friday night.
The pop-up shop is titled “TV Anime ‘Funeral of Freiren’ POP UP SHOP – Butterfly Freiren.” Animator Ayaka Minoshima, who is also involved in the production of the main series, has created a special visual that looks like a watercolor painting.
The visual features an impressive composition of butterflies fluttering around Freiren, Fern, Stark, Himmel, Heiter, and Eisen, creating an unprecedented atmosphere. A variety of goods using these will be on sale.
In addition, for every 2,200 yen (tax included) spent on new products at this pop-up shop, you will receive one of six bonus postcards featuring original illustrations.
The “TV Anime ‘Funeral of Freiren’ POP UP SHOP Butterfly Freiren” will be held from Friday, December 5 to Sunday, December 14, 2025, at the Shinjuku Marui Annex 2nd floor event space in Tokyo, and from Friday, December 26, 2025, to Sunday, January 11, 2026 at the Namba Marui 5th floor event space in Osaka.
