The 12-episode short anime “Milky☆Subway: The Galactic Limited Express,” which garnered over 150 million views on YouTube and has garnered fan support from celebrities across various fields, has been announced for a theatrical release titled “Milky☆Subway: The Galactic Limited Express” on Friday, February 6, 2026. A teaser trailer has also been released.

This film is an enhanced version of the anime that garnered immediate attention upon its broadcast and streaming debut in July 2025, re-edited for the theatrical release with the addition of new scenes. Despite being a science fiction film, it features visuals that evoke nostalgia, unique and natural dialogue, and a pleasantly engaging soundtrack.

It has also been reported that director Yohei Kameyama handled the original story, direction, script, character design, sound direction, and production almost entirely by himself over about 2 years.

The story is set aboard an interplanetary train called the “Milky Subway.” Chiharu (voiced by Momoka Terasawa) and Makina (voiced by Anna Nagase), along with other eccentric characters, are arrested for violating the Galactic Road Traffic Act and tasked by police officer Ryoko (voiced by Mikako Komatsu) with cleaning the train as a volunteer task. What should have been a simple task suddenly goes out of control, and the group finds itself embroiled in a significant incident.

Director Yohei Kameyama commented on the decision to release the film in theaters, “It still hasn’t really sunk in, but when it was decided that it would be made into a feature film, I went to the cinema once again,” adding, “The sense of realism and immersion in the space of the theater was incredible,” and expressed his enthusiasm by saying that additional scenes have been carefully created, “I’m working hard to make sure that people leave the theater satisfied.” The director’s full comments are as follows:

Comment from Director Yohei Kameyama
It still hasn’t really sunk in yet, but when it was decided that a feature film would be made, I went to the cinema again. The sense of realism and immersion in the theatre’s space was incredible. I’ve been trying to make the additional scenes as good as possible, and it’s been a challenge because I’ve overstated things (laughs), but I’m working hard to make sure that people leave the theatre satisfied.
I’m looking forward to hearing what they think of it.
