The trailer and stills for “The King of Kings,” an animated film inspired by “The Life of Jesus,” a children’s book written by Charles Dickens, known for “A Christmas Carol,” have been released.

This film depicts Jesus’ life from birth to resurrection, and was produced, directed, and written by Korean MOFAC STUDIO, led by Chang Seong-ho, who poured over 30 years of expertise into it. It took 10 years to produce. It has been released in over 90 countries across Asia, Europe, and Africa, and grossed over $60 million in North America. It surpassed “Parasite” ($53.84 million) to become the highest-grossing Korean film ever released in North America.

Despite being a Korean film, the English voice acting cast is impressive. Kenneth Branagh of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets” stars as Charles Dickens, and Uma Thurman of “Kill Bill” plays his wife, Catherine Dickens. Oscar Isaac, from the “Star Wars” series, plays Jesus Christ, and the cast also includes Mark Hamill, Pierce Brosnan, Forest Whitaker, and Ben Kingsley.

The trailer begins with Charles Dickens telling his beloved son, Walter, “I have a story to tell you,” and starts telling the story of Jesus Christ, “the world’s most famous hero.” While Jesus Christ demonstrates his miraculous powers, restoring sight to the eyes of a blind man by gently touching his hand, his powers are feared, and he is driven to crucifixion.

The stills also include many familiar scenes that you may have encountered in art or history classes, such as the journey with the 12 disciples, the meal with the disciples depicted in Leonardo da Vinci’s “The Last Supper,” the miraculous image of Jesus walking on water, and the image of Jesus carrying the cross.

The stills show Charles Dickens telling the story with gestures, and the adorable image of his son, Walter, and his beloved cat, who have become immersed in the story of Jesus Christ. “The King of Kings” will be released nationwide from March 27, 2014, at TOHO Cinemas Hibiya and other theaters.
