The upcoming fall 2026 anime “Suikoden: The Anime” has released the synopsis and preview stills for its first episode, titled “Hometown.” The highly anticipated adaptation of KONAMI’s beloved RPG series will premiere in Japan on October 3, 2026, with the first episode receiving an extended 60-minute broadcast.

The opening episode follows Riliu and his best friend Jowy, two young soldiers serving in the Highland Kingdom’s youth brigade. What should have been their final night before returning home quickly turns into a life-changing tragedy when their unit is ambushed in the mountains.

As the two friends are separated and swept into enemy territory, Riliu begins to question whether the attack was actually part of a larger plan. The episode sets up the central conflict of the story while introducing viewers to the complicated relationship between war, friendship, loyalty, and fate.

“Suikoden” brings the beloved RPG story to television

“Suikoden” is one of KONAMI’s long-running RPG franchises, beginning with the first game in Japan in 1995. Each entry in the series features its own setting and characters while building stories around political conflict, war, friendship, and the gathering of numerous allies.

The new anime is specifically based on “Suikoden II,” the second mainline game in the franchise. KONAMI announced the anime adaptation in March 2025, describing it as the first television anime from KONAMI Animation and an opportunity to bring the detailed story of “Suikoden II” to a new audience.

One of the most notable changes for the anime is the protagonist’s name. The main character of the original game did not have a fixed official name because players could choose one. For the anime adaptation, he has been officially named Riliu, with Toshiki Kumagai providing his voice.

His closest friend, Jowy, is voiced by Shimba Tsuchiya, while their childhood friend Nanami is played by Ayumi Hinohara. The trio forms an important emotional foundation for the story as the characters are pulled into the growing conflict surrounding the Highland Kingdom and the City-State Alliance.

Episode 1 “Hometown” synopsis

The first episode introduces Riliu and Jowy as members of the Highland Kingdom’s youth soldier unit. The two boys have grown up together and share a strong friendship, looking forward to returning home after their current military assignment.

Their hometown, Kyaro, is waiting for them, and Nanami, their childhood friend, is also expecting their return.

However, their hopes of going home peacefully are suddenly destroyed.

On the final night of their expedition, the young soldiers are ambushed by enemy forces in the mountains. Riliu and Jowy find themselves trapped and surrounded, leaving them with very few options.

With the situation becoming increasingly dangerous, the two friends make a promise that they will meet again.

They then jump into a waterfall under the cover of darkness.

The decision separates the two boys and sends them into completely different circumstances.

Riliu wakes up inside an enemy fortress.

After losing consciousness, Riliu awakens inside a mercenary fortress belonging to the opposing City-State Alliance. Instead of returning home as he had expected, he finds himself surrounded by people who should be his enemies.

Riliu is treated as a prisoner and is forced to work inside the fortress.

As he spends more time there, however, an unsettling question begins to grow in his mind.

Was the ambush really an ordinary attack?

Riliu starts to suspect that the Highland army may have been involved in a larger scheme. If the youth brigade was deliberately led into a trap, someone must have known where the soldiers would be.

This mystery becomes one of the key questions introduced in the opening episode.

The situation becomes even more surprising when Jowy appears at the fortress. Like Riliu, he has also survived the fall and ended up in enemy territory.

The two friends finally reunite.

Rather than remaining trapped inside the fortress, Riliu and Jowy decide that they must return to Kyaro and discover the truth behind the events that separated them from their comrades.

Their escape marks the beginning of a much larger journey.

A story about friendship, war, and difficult choices

For viewers unfamiliar with the “Suikoden” franchise, the story may initially appear to be a straightforward fantasy war adventure. However, the anime’s premise quickly introduces deeper questions about friendship and loyalty.

Riliu and Jowy begin the story as close friends who believe they are fighting for the same cause. Both are young soldiers caught in a conflict much larger than themselves.

The ambush changes everything.

They are forced to question what they know, whom they can trust, and what they are actually fighting for.

The official introduction describes the two boys as looking toward the same future before being swept into the “whirlpool of fate” created by war. Their journey eventually leads them toward immense power and the mysterious 108 stars associated with the “Suikoden” story.

This combination of personal relationships and large-scale political conflict is one of the central elements of the franchise.

The 60-minute premiere gives the story a strong opening

The first episode of “Suikoden: The Anime” will be broadcast as a 60-minute extended special. This gives the adaptation additional time to establish the characters, introduce the military conflict, depict the ambush, and set up Riliu and Jowy’s journey.

The premiere begins on October 3, 2026, with the first broadcast scheduled for 8:00 p.m. on TOKYO MX. The series will subsequently roll out across a total of 32 Japanese television stations.

The extended opening is particularly important because the story has a large cast and a detailed world. Rather than rushing through the early events, the longer premiere can establish the relationship between Riliu, Jowy, and Nanami before the story moves into the larger war.

A major new chapter for the “Suikoden” franchise

The anime arrives at an important time for the franchise. KONAMI has continued expanding “Suikoden” through remasters and new projects, including “Suikoden I&II HD Remaster Gate Rune and Dunan Unification Wars,” which was released worldwide in March 2025. KONAMI has also announced “Suikoden STAR LEAP,” a new mobile title set within the franchise’s broader world.

The anime therefore serves not only as an adaptation of a classic RPG story but also as another way for new audiences to discover the “Suikoden” universe.

For longtime fans, the appearance of familiar characters such as Viktor, Flik, Leknaat, Luca Blight, and others adds another layer of anticipation. For newcomers, Riliu and Jowy’s story provides a starting point without requiring prior knowledge of every game in the franchise.

What to expect from Episode 1

The first episode of “Suikoden: The Anime” sets up several important questions:

  • Why was the Highland youth brigade ambushed?
  • Can Riliu and Jowy trust their own army?
  • Who is behind the mysterious attack?
  • Why did the two friends end up in enemy territory?
  • What will happen when they return to Kyaro?
  • How will the war change their friendship?
  • What role will the mysterious 108 stars play in their journey?

With a 60-minute premiere, a large voice cast, and a story based on one of KONAMI’s most celebrated RPG entries, “Suikoden: The Anime” is positioned as one of the major game-to-anime adaptations of the fall 2026 season.
