Can a devoted fan help his favourite idol become the centre of a nationally popular group—and earn the chance to marry her? The upcoming TV anime Promise Me the Spotlight (Watashi o Center ni Suru to Chikaimasu ka?) has revealed its first key visual, teaser promotional video, main staff, and voice cast. The series will be broadcast across TV Tokyo’s six-station network.

Based on Jun Wakatsuki’s manga published through Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket platform, the anime follows Mizuki Natsuno, the least popular member of the popular idol group Melty Strawberry, and Koichi Okuda, her only dedicated fan. When Koichi promises to help Mizuki become the group’s centre, she responds with an unexpected condition: if he succeeds, she will marry him.

The newly announced main cast includes Kazuki Mikawa as Mizuki Natsuno, Taihi Kimura as Koichi Okuda, Mai Sugano as Awayuki Shirai, and Yukari Anzai as Hatsune Fukuba. The production team is led by director Seiji Kishi, with animation handled by TEAM TillDawn. Singer-songwriter Yuika will perform the opening theme song, titled “Nanimono demo Nakatta Watashi Dakara” (Because I Was Once Nobody).

Alongside the anime announcement, the production team has also launched Berrytter, a character-focused online content platform that gives fans a closer look at the fictional idols’ daily lives and interactions before the series begins airing.

Promise Me the Spotlight Anime Reveals Its First Key Visual and Teaser PV

The TV anime adaptation of Promise Me the Spotlight was first announced in July 2026, and fans have now received a major update. On November 4, 2026, the official website revealed the key visual, teaser PV, main cast, and production staff.

The newly released promotional material introduces the main characters and offers an early look at the anime’s world. The story centres on the relationship between an underappreciated idol and the only fan who continues to support her.

The series will air on six stations in the TV Tokyo network. However, the production committee has not yet announced the exact premiere date or full broadcast schedule. More information about the release timetable and streaming availability is expected in future updates.

The anime’s central concept is built around an unusual partnership: an idol who wants to rise above her current position and a fan who is determined to help her achieve that dream. Rather than focusing only on performances and the glamour of the entertainment industry, the story also explores the dedication, effort, and emotional connection behind the relationship between idols and their supporters.

What Is Promise Me the Spotlight About?

Promise Me the Spotlight, commonly known in Japan as Watashi Sen, is based on the manga written and illustrated by Jun Wakatsuki. It is serialized on Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket manga platform.

The manga attracted considerable attention when its first chapter was published on X (formerly Twitter) in 2023. The post reportedly received approximately 40,000 reposts and 200,000 likes, helping the series reach a wider audience. Its cumulative circulation has surpassed 200,000 copies, and the sixth collected volume is currently available in Japan.

The story takes place in the world of a nationally popular idol group called Melty Strawberry, commonly abbreviated as Melsto. Although the group enjoys widespread popularity, not every member receives the same level of attention.

Mizuki Natsuno is the group’s least popular member. She belongs to the third row of performers and is known for her almost expressionless face and extremely cold attitude towards fans. At her handshake events, only one person regularly waits in her queue: Koichi Okuda.

Despite receiving little attention from other fans, Mizuki continues to work hard. She never neglects her lessons, rehearsals, or group activities. Her dedication is not always visible to the public, but Koichi recognises her efforts and continues to support her.

One day, Koichi makes a bold declaration:

“I’ll make Zukki the centre!”

Mizuki responds with a surprising promise of her own. If Koichi really succeeds in making her the centre of Melty Strawberry, she will marry him.

This unexpected agreement becomes the starting point of their story. Together, the least popular idol and her only devoted fan begin working towards a seemingly impossible goal: taking Mizuki from the bottom of the group’s popularity rankings to the most important position on stage.

Meet the Main Characters and Voice Cast

The anime’s four principal characters and their voice actors have been officially announced. Each character plays a different role in the idol group’s world and in Mizuki’s journey.

Mizuki Natsuno – Voiced by Kazuki Mikawa

Mizuki Natsuno is the protagonist and one of the members of Melty Strawberry. Nicknamed Zukki, she belongs to the group’s third row and currently holds the lowest popularity ranking.

Her expressionless face and cold responses often make her seem distant. However, her attitude does not mean that she lacks passion. Mizuki is a hardworking idol who takes her lessons, rehearsals, and events seriously.

Although she has only one regular fan at her handshake events, she continues to put effort into her work. Her determination and hidden personality are among the central elements of the story.

Voice actress Kazuki Mikawa expressed her excitement about playing Mizuki. She explained that she has loved and respected idols for a long time and has often received encouragement from her favourite performers. After encountering the manga, she felt an even stronger connection to the subject.

Mikawa also mentioned that playing an idol character came with pressure, but she is approaching the role with enthusiasm. She described the series as a charming combination of heartwarming moments and realistic portrayals of the idol world.

Koichi Okuda – Voiced by Taihi Kimura

Koichi Okuda is a high school student and Mizuki’s only dedicated fan. While other members of the group attract large audiences, Koichi continues to support Zukki even when nobody else appears at her events.

He regularly attends her handshake sessions and works hard to organise her birthday celebrations, even when he has to manage everything alone.

Koichi is extremely passionate about his favourite idol. Whenever the subject turns to Mizuki, he becomes energetic and talks enthusiastically about her qualities.

His promise to make Mizuki the centre gives the story its main direction. Instead of simply admiring her from a distance, he decides to take action and help her achieve her dream.

Voice actor Taihi Kimura shared his enthusiasm for the character, particularly Koichi’s unwavering devotion to Zukki. He also praised Mizuki’s cool and beautiful appearance and described Koichi as an incredibly happy fan because he gets to support the idol he loves.

Kimura added that viewers should also pay attention to the enthusiastic background conversations and other fan characters who appear in the series.

Awayuki Shirai – Voiced by Mai Sugano

Awayuki Shirai is the established centre of Melty Strawberry and one of the group’s most charismatic idols. As a member of the first row, she enjoys a level of popularity and recognition that Mizuki has yet to achieve.

Awayuki has a strong stage presence and knows how to capture the attention of her audience. Her professional attitude extends beyond performances, and she carefully maintains her idol image even in private.

Despite her charming personality, she does not always reveal her true feelings. Her relationship with Mizuki is particularly important, and viewers are encouraged to pay attention to the emotions she rarely expresses openly.

Voice actress Mai Sugano said she was delighted to receive the role because she had admired Awayuki’s confident presence and charisma. She also shared that the recording sessions had been enjoyable and that she hopes viewers will discover the character’s many different qualities.

Hatsune Fukuba – Voiced by Yukari Anzai

Hatsune Fukuba is another member of Melty Strawberry’s third row. She is the oldest member of that group section and is known for being considerate, caring, and attentive to the people around her.

Unlike characters who focus mainly on their own ambitions, Hatsune often looks after her fellow members. Her straightforward personality and thoughtful nature make her an important supporting presence in the group.

Voice actress Yukari Anzai explained that she developed an even greater appreciation for idols after reading the manga during her audition process. She particularly enjoyed how the story presents the idol industry from both the performers’ and fans’ perspectives.

Anzai also expressed her affection for Hatsune, jokingly declaring herself a devoted fan of the character and welcoming other fans to support her together.

Who Is Behind the Promise Me the Spotlight Anime?

The production team has also been announced, with experienced anime creators taking charge of the adaptation.

  • Original work: Jun Wakatsuki – Promise Me the Spotlight (Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket)
  • Director: Seiji Kishi
  • Series composition: Yuko Kakihara
  • Character design: Kazuaki Morita
  • Animation production: TEAM TillDawn

Director Seiji Kishi is known for working on anime such as Assassination Classroom and Classroom of the Elite. His involvement brings an experienced director to the project.

Yuko Kakihara is responsible for series composition, the role that involves organising the story and adapting its material into the structure of an anime series. Kazuaki Morita is handling character design, while TEAM TillDawn is responsible for animation production.

The combination of these staff members will bring Jun Wakatsuki’s characters and their idol-industry story to the screen.

Yuika Performs the Opening Theme Song

Singer-songwriter Yuika has been announced as the artist behind the anime’s opening theme.

The song is titled “Nanimono demo Nakatta Watashi Dakara”, which can be translated as “Because I Was Once Nobody.” The song’s message connects closely with the anime’s central themes of support, recognition, and the relationship between performers and the people who believe in them.

In her comment, Yuika explained that although the series focuses on idols, its message also resonates with her own experiences as a singer-songwriter.

She described how she did not originally see herself as someone particularly special or as a person others would admire. However, the people who discovered her music and continued to support her gave her a reason to keep creating songs.

Yuika said that she wrote the theme song as a way of expressing gratitude to those supporters. She hopes listeners will enjoy it alongside the anime.

The song’s message fits the story of Mizuki and Koichi particularly well. Mizuki may be overlooked by most of the group’s audience, but Koichi’s continued support gives her the encouragement to pursue a bigger dream.

Berrytter Launches with 10 Character Accounts

Another interesting announcement is the launch of Berrytter, an online content platform created to share the everyday lives and conversations of characters from Promise Me the Spotlight.

The platform is designed to give fans additional insight into the fictional world of Melty Strawberry. Rather than waiting for the anime episodes, viewers can follow character accounts and discover their daily activities, interactions, and conversations.

Berrytter officially opened on November 4, 2026, at 12:00 p.m. (Japan time), with accounts for 10 characters.

The initial lineup includes:

  1. Mizuki Natsuno
  2. Koichi Okuda
  3. Awayuki Shirai
  4. Hatsune Fukuba
  5. Saki Kageyama
  6. Emi Okamoto
  7. Mio Shiomi
  8. Misuzu Sato
  9. Minori Mochizuki
  10. Lala Hoshino

The platform is intended to expand the experience of the series beyond the anime itself. Fans can follow the characters’ interactions and get a better sense of their personalities before the television broadcast begins.

The official announcement also suggests that more character accounts could be added in the future, making Berrytter a feature worth following as the anime approaches its premiere.

Why Promise Me the Spotlight Could Appeal to Idol Anime Fans

One of the most interesting aspects of Promise Me the Spotlight is that it explores the idol industry from two different perspectives.

On one side, there is Mizuki, a performer who works hard but receives very little recognition. On the other side, there is Koichi, a fan who believes in her even when almost nobody else does.

This setup creates a different kind of idol story. Instead of beginning with an already successful performer, the series focuses on someone who is struggling to find her place within a popular group.

It also highlights the work that takes place outside the spotlight. Idol performances may look effortless to audiences, but performers spend considerable time practising, attending events, and maintaining relationships with fans.

The relationship between Mizuki and Koichi adds a romantic and comedic element to the story. Their agreement about marriage is an unusual starting point, but the larger challenge is whether Koichi can genuinely help Mizuki rise through the group’s popularity rankings.

The series may appeal to viewers who enjoy idol-themed anime, character-driven romantic comedies, and underdog stories about pursuing a dream.
