Indeed, this is the epitome of a protagonist’s sacrifice! In the climactic final episode of the anime’ Owarimonogatari Mayoi Hell/Hitagi Rendezvous/Ougi Dark,’ Araragi Koyomi (CV: Kamiya Hiroshi) selflessly gives up his life to protect the last boss, a moment that had viewers on the edge of their seats, their hearts pounding with anticipation. It’s a moment that genuinely encapsulates the essence of Araragi-kun.
The ” Monogatari” series is a juvenile fantasy novel famous as the masterpiece of the popular author Nisio Isin. It tells the story of Araragi Koyomi, a high school boy who has become almost immortal, and the girls who encounter supernatural phenomena. The series has six parts: the first season, the second season, the final season, the off-season, the monster season, and the family season.
The first six parts have already been animated, but the latest work, “Monogatari Series Off & Monster Season,” will be distributed on July 6th. The anime “Owarimonogatari Mayoi Hell / Hitagi Rendezvous / Ougi Dark” begins when Koyomi arrives in the afterlife.
In the seventh and final episode of “Owarimonogatari Mayoi Hell / Hitagi Rendezvous / Ougi Dark,” the true identity of Ougi, who has been operating behind the scenes of numerous incidents, is finally revealed. Koyomi’s self-critical spirit creates Ougi. Having seen through her true identity, Ougi is nearly annihilated by “Kurayami,” an entity that punishes supernatural phenomena. As Ougi bids farewell, Koyomi initially says, “Goodbye, Ougi-chan…” but then tries to shield her from “Kurayami,” saying, “But I just can’t do it!”
Witnessing Koyomi, who had sacrificed his arm and was bleeding, even the typically composed Ougi was visibly affected, questioning, ‘What’s the use of helping me here? You were wrong all along.’ Koyomi, resolute, clarified, ‘I wasn’t aiding someone else… I was merely saving myself…’ and ‘If my past actions were not misguided, then surely, my current ones can’t be either.’
Throughout the series, Koyomi has sometimes sacrificed himself to save many people. On X (formerly Twitter), Koyomi’s kindness towards Ougi, who was considered the final boss, drew a stream of praise, with comments such as, “He’s transcended justice, and it’s ingrained in him,” “This is what Araragi-kun is like,” and “He’s a handsome guy.”
