Can you see it if you look closely?
While there is constant buzz about new works such as “Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuX” and “Mobile Suit Gundam Hathaway’s Flash,” attention is being drawn once again to the original Mobile Suit Gundam. This work is talked about as a monumental achievement in robot anime, but did you know that the “playfulness” of the staff at the time of production is sprinkled throughout it?
Characters from other anime works that are entirely unrelated to the original work appear in the work. The unexpected appearance of “Daitarn 3” characters is notable in one scene, specifically in episode 14, “Stop Time.” In a scene where a magician is performing magic tricks for the Zeon ground forces, a familiar face was lurking among the soldiers gathered as an audience.
The magician himself looks just like Commander Edwin from Invincible Steel Man Daitarn 3, but what’s even more surprising is that among the soldiers, some people look like Banjo Haran and Garrison Tokita. Invincible Steel Man Daitarn 3 is a work that was broadcast from 1978 to 1979 by Sunrise Japan and directed by Tomino Yoshiyuki. In other words, the characters from the predecessor work that was produced just before Gundam somehow appeared on the battlefield of the Universal Century.
Infiltrating the Federal Army Base? The most shocking thing is the possibility that the “Lupin III” gang has infiltrated Jaburo, the most important base of the Federal Army. In episode 31, “Zanzibar, Pursuit!”, pay attention to the guidance scene as the “White Base” departs from the base dock. If you look closely at the face peeking out from the worker’s helmet, you can see Lupin’s distinctive facial features and Jigen’s trademark beard.
Furthermore, in episode 39, “Newtype, Sharia Bull,” when General Revil descends on Solomon Fortress, you can even spot figures resembling Goemon Ishikawa and Inspector Zenigata among the band that greets him. Could it be that a group of master thieves was taking advantage of the chaos of wartime to steal military secrets? Even in the Universal Century, they may have been on a grand adventure across the universe.
