In the 15th episode of the anime series Oshi no Ko, which began airing on July 24, Hoshino Aqua (voiced by Otsuka Takeo) smiled as she recalled a happy memory. Then, Amemiya Gorou (voiced by Ito Kento), who was in his previous life, told Aqua, “Don’t have fun,” causing viewers to tremble in fear, with comments like, “I’m tired of expressing trauma,” and “I’m under Gorou’s spell!”

The anime “Oshi no Ko” is based on a hit manga by Akasaka Aka and Yokoyari Mengo. The story begins when obstetrician-gynecologist Goro, also known as Amemiya Goro, is reincarnated as Hoshino Aqua, the son of his favorite idol, Hoshino Ai (CV: Takahashi Rie ).

After Ai is murdered, Aqua enters the entertainment industry to discover the truth behind the incident. The anime’s first season will be broadcast in 2023, and the live-action drama series will be available for streaming from November 28, 2024. The movie sequel to the live-action drama will be released nationwide on December 20.

In the last episode, episode 14, Akane Kurokawa (voiced by Manaka Iwami) took Aqua, who doesn’t like theater, to see a play. When the play started, Aqua was surprised by the unexpected gimmicks, such as the curtain turning into a monitor and the audience seats rotating, saying, “It was 50 times more interesting than I imagined…” She said excitedly, “Honestly, it was good. It was perfect.” When Akane was praised for her performance, she smiled and said, “Hehehe, hehehehe,” and Aqua retorted, “Your face is all messed up.”

Akane looked genuinely happy, and fans online were touched by her, saying things like “She’s just super cute,” “I love Akane in geek mode,” and “She is a theater geek.”

In episode 15, “Emotional Acting,” Aqua is rehearsed for a stage performance and is instructed to show more emotion. Her co-star, Kana Arima (voiced by Megumi Han), advises her to “act while remembering things that made you happy.”

Aqua’s mouth corners turned up as she immediately thought back on the happy past. But the next moment, the shadow of Goro, his pre-reincarnation self, spoke harsh words to Aqua, saying, “Don’t enjoy yourself. Don’t forget, you couldn’t save her. You have no right to do that…” Ai’s dead body was shown on the screen, and Aqua, remembering the incident, crouched on the floor.

The depiction of Aqua, who remains obsessed with Ai’s incident, has resulted in a series of reactions online, such as “It gave me goosebumps,” “A genuine horror scene,” “The portrayal of trauma is hard to handle…” and “Goro’s curse!”
