A new theatrical version of the popular anime series “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED” will be released on January 26, 2024. The title will be “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM,” and the story will be a sequel to “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY.” At the same time, a PV will be released and produced under the direction of Mitsuo Fukuda, who also directed the TV series.
The teaser visual released for the new “Gundam SEED” video is a beautiful visual that reflects the figure of Lacus looking back into Kira.
The first PV opens as a new story of the “Gundam SEED series.” While various keywords related to “SEED,” such as “Coordinator” and “Natural,” are scattered, Kira’s confused expression collapses her mobile suit. Furthermore, Kira and Lacus are shown one after another staring at each other. The tense scene gives us a sense of a new battle and turmoil about to begin again in a world that should have returned to peace.
The “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED” series began broadcasting in October 2002 with 50 episodes and was the first Gundam TV series produced in the 21st century. In the story, human beings genetically modified (Coordinator) and human beings (Natural) are divided into the military organization ZAFT and the Earth Allied Forces. It depicts the suffering and growth of Athrun Zala.
In addition to the fan base, it has gained many women and has a maximum audience rating of 8.0%. Furthermore, it sparked a second Gunpla boom, mainly among elementary school students, and took the world by storm as the “New Generation Gundam Series.” In October 2004, the sequel TV series “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY” was also broadcast and achieved a maximum audience rating of 8.2%, surpassing the previous series.
The total number of package sales in the series has exceeded 4 million, and it has become a popular work that has swept all over Japan, transcending the framework of TV animation series such as music and events.
Comment from Director Mitsuo Fukuda
Originally, it was supposed to be delivered immediately after the TV series, but I apologize for making everyone wait so long. Thank you to everyone who continues to support us despite this.
The time of 20 years has changed how to make animation and the staff who participate. People who had watched “Gundam SEED” have joined as new staff, and the old team can be said to be veterans in terms of age alone. Amidst the transition from analog to 3D digital and the search for new forms of expression, we former staff are spending days facing our past techniques and sensibilities.
The story will be a new sequel to the previous TV series, “Mobile Suit Gundam SEED DESTINY.” As long as it is “Gundam SEED,” I think the best way is “Gundam SEED,” but I don’t think that people will feel that it is the same even if I do the same thing as back then.
First and foremost, it’s not the “Gundam SEED” I want to see: this time, the new and old fusion of staff and technology. We are aiming for a new “Gundam SEED” that matches the times while taking advantage of the goodness of analog.
In the TV series, there are some parts that I still need to complete, and I would like to clear them and take on new challenges. I want to go back 20 years and create a new drama with Kira, Athrun, and Shin again. Ladies and gentlemen, please look forward to it.
