New cast for “Kochikame” produced by Gallop
” Kochikame, ” also known as “Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Kōen-mae Hashutsujo,” is a nationally beloved manga by Osamu Akimoto that began serialization in Weekly Shonen Jump in September 1976 and continued as a weekly serialization for 40 years until 2016. It is a slapstick comedy about the protagonist, the unconventional, money-loving police officer Ryoutsu Kankichi (commonly known as Ryou-san), and his colleagues, who mainly live in Kameari, Katsushika Ward. It has previously been adapted into an anime and a live-action drama.
The new anime, “Shin Kochira Katsushika-ku Kameari Kōen-mae Hashutsujo,” will be animated by Studio Gallop, which also worked on the 1996 TV anime. As the title includes the word “new,” it has also been revealed that the cast will be completely new.
A magazine containing carefully selected stories from Osamu Akimoto has also been published.
At the “Jump Festa 2026” stage, the project outline was introduced alongside the 50th anniversary logo, creating a massive buzz at the venue. Details of the new cast will be announced in September 2026.
The teaser visual also features the protagonist, Ryotsu Kankichi, raising his hand toward the viewer, with the Kanamachi Water Purification Plant intake tower in Katsushika Ward in the background. While the image and composition will be familiar to longtime fans, it also conveys the message, “We’ll meet again.”
In addition, in parallel with the anime adaptation, a 50th anniversary project for the original manga will be launched. “Akimoto Osamu’s Nice Choice! Kochikame 50th Anniversary!!” (Shueisha Jump Remix), featuring episodes personally selected by Akimoto Osamu, will be published.
The first issue, on Friday, December 26, 2025, will include a five-page new one-shot. Each issue will consist of a commentary by Akimoto Osamu. It is scheduled for release at convenience stores and other locations on the fourth Friday of each month.
