The official synopsis, preview images, and web preview for Episode 81 (Season 4, Episode 15) of Re: ZERO -Starting Life in Another World- have been released. Titled “A Devoted Star” in the English release and “一途な星” (Ichizu na Hoshi) in Japanese, the episode continues Subaru Natsuki’s desperate struggle to overcome the mysterious trials inside the tower.
The latest preview makes one thing clear: Subaru is once again being forced to rely on his most painful ability, Return by Death.
Rather than simply defeating one powerful enemy, Subaru must understand the rules of the tower and find a way through five different threats. That includes a Witchbeast stampede, two Sin Archbishops, a gigantic scorpion, a mysterious black shadow, and the terrifying presence of Reid Astrea.
Episode 81 is part of the second half of Re: ZERO Season 4, currently known as the Recapture Arc. The episode aired on September 2, 2026, with the series continuing its nationwide Japanese television broadcast.
Re: ZERO Episode 81 Title: “A Devoted Star”
The official title of Episode 81 is “A Devoted Star.”
The episode is also known as Season 4 Episode 15, making it the 81st numbered episode of the overall TV anime.
The title is particularly appropriate given the episode’s focus on the Pleiades Watchtower, the night sky, ky and Subaru’s increasingly complicated relationship with Shaula, the mysterious guardian of the tower.
The new episode is set to push the story deeper into the tower’s deadly rules while Subaru attempts to turn his repeated deaths into useful information.
For newcomers, this is one of the most important concepts to understand about Re:ZERO: Subaru does not simply become stronger after dying. Instead, his ability allows him to return to an earlier point in time, giving him another chance to change the outcome.

This creates a major problem for Subaru and everyone else inside the Pleiades Watchtower.
The tower is already under attack, and Subaru must deal with several dangerous threats at the same time.

Subaru therefore cannot simply concentrate on one enemy.

Subaru’s “Death” Trial-and-Error Begins
The official synopsis uses a clever wordplay around the Japanese expression for trial and error, turning it into something closer to “death and error.”
That perfectly describes Subaru’s situation.
After returning from death, Subaru begins questioning Shaula about the hidden rules of the test.
The problem is that Shaula has not necessarily explained everything about the tower’s trials.
For Subaru, simply knowing that he can Return by Death is not enough. He needs information.
If an attempt fails, Subaru must work out what caused the failure. Then he has to return to an earlier point and make a different decision.
This creates a dangerous puzzle:
Which event should Subaru change first?
If he saves one person, another threat may appear.
If he focuses on the Witchbeasts, one of the Sin Archbishops may attack.

Sin Archbishops are among the most dangerous enemies in the Re: ZERO world. Each represents one of the deadly sins and possesses a unique Authority.
For beginners, an Authority is a supernatural power associated with the Witch Factors in the world of Re: ZERO. These abilities can operate according to completely different rules from ordinary magic.
That unpredictability makes Sin Archbishops especially difficult for Subaru to deal with.
- The Giant Scorpion
A gigantic scorpion suddenly appears inside the increasingly chaotic situation.
The official synopsis specifically identifies the creature as one of the five major obstacles Subaru must overcome.
Its sudden appearance is another reminder that the Watchtower is not operating like a normal dungeon where enemies can simply be defeated one at a time.
- The Mysterious Black Shadow
Another major threat is a jet-black shadow rising upward.
The official preview deliberately keeps the identity and purpose of this shadow mysterious.
That makes it one of the biggest unanswered questions heading into the episode.
Because Re: ZERO frequently connects mysterious phenomena to larger supernatural forces, viewers will naturally be watching closely to see whether the shadow is another enemy, a consequence of the tower’s trial,l or something connected to the larger mystery surrounding the Watchtower.

What Does “Return by Death” Mean?
For new viewers, Return by Death is the central ability that defines Subaru’s journey.
When Subaru dies, he can return to a predetermined point in the past.
Everyone else generally continues without memories of the previous timeline, while Subaru retains the memories of what happened.
This gives him an enormous advantage in theory.
However, it is also an incredibly cruel ability.
Subaru cannot simply explain everything he knows because revealing certain information connected to Return by Death can have dangerous consequences. As a result, he often has to make other people trust him without being able to explain exactly why he knows something.

That is why the phrase “death by trial and error” is so appropriate for Episode 81.

Why Episode 81 Could Be Important for the Watchtower Arc
The Pleiades Watchtower has already introduced some of the most complicated mysteries of Season 4.
Subaru and his companions came to the tower searching for answers connected to the aftermath of the Pristella conflict.
Their larger goal includes finding ways to help people affected by the powers of the Sin Archbishops, including those whose memories or names have been taken.
But instead of receiving easy answers, Subaru has become trapped in another dangerous situation.
The tower’s trials force him to confront enemies, mysteries, and rules that he does not completely understand.

First-Ever Re: ZERO Anime Exhibition Coming to Shibuya
The franchise’s first major anime exhibition will take place from September 12 through October 4, 2026, at Shibuya BEAM Gallery in Tokyo.
The exhibition will look back at the anime’s 10-year history, covering material from the first season through the fourth season.
According to the official announcement, visitors can expect recreated scenes, video presentations, original animation materials, storyboards, background and art-setting materials, and other production-related items.
The exhibition is designed to show not only the finished anime but also the work that went into creating it.
The venue is open from 11:00 AM to 9:00 PM, with final admission at 8:30 PM.
It is located on the fourth floor of Shibuya BEAM, approximately five minutes on foot from Shibuya Station.
New Exhibition Admission Gifts Revealed
The exhibition has also revealed special admission gifts.
The first set of admission gifts consists of subtitle-and-scene still stickers, featuring memorable moments from different episodes of the anime.
The first distribution period runs from September 12 through September 23, while the second set begins on September 24 and continues through the exhibition’s final day on October 4.
The first set includes scenes associated with several major episodes, including Episode 7, Episode 11, Episode 25, Episode 37, Episode 40, Episode 41, Episode 57, Episode 62, Episode 7,2 and Episode 77.
The exhibition has also introduced a special ticket option that comes with an acrylic shikishi featuring foil-stamped reproduction signatures from the anime’s voice cast.
More Re: ZERO Events Are Coming in September and October
The 10th-anniversary celebration does not end with the exhibition.
A special Emilia Birthday Life 2026 in Marui pop-up event is scheduled to take place at Shibuya Modi from September 19 to September 27, followed by another event at Kobe Marui from October 3 to October 12.
The exhibition and the Emilia birthday event are also connected through a special campaign, giving fans another reason to visit both events.
This means September and October will be particularly busy months for Re: ZERO fans, with the television anime continuing alongside anniversary events and merchandise campaigns.
Episode 81 Mini-Anime: “Long Live Me”
Alongside the main episode, the official mini-anime also received its Episode 81 synopsis and preview images.
However, the Japanese title is more accurately translated as “Long Live Me” or “Long Live Yours Truly,” rather than simply translating it literally.
The mini-anime shifts attention away from Subaru’s deadly Watchtower challenge.
In this short story, Reinhard arrives at the prison tower and takes Sirius away.
Felt watches the situation unfold, but she is then suddenly approached by another person.
That person is Russell Fellow, a merchant-guild figure from the Royal Capital.
The mini-anime therefore provides a lighter side story while the main series continues dealing with extremely serious events.
What Happens Next in Re: ZERO?
Episode 81 raises several major questions.
Can Subaru discover the actual rules of the Watchtower’s trial?
Can he find a way to overcome all five obstacles without sacrificing his allies?
What will Reid do now that he can move freely through the tower?
