It has been revealed that director Anno Hideaki, known for the anime series Evangelion, will create a new film based on the famous anime Space Battleship Yamato.

The first event in the plans to celebrate the 50th anniversary of the broadcast of “Space Battleship Yamato,” “Space Battleship Yamato 50th Anniversary Screening,” was held on October 6th at Shinjuku Piccadilly (Shinjuku, Tokyo), where director Anno revealed, “I am now able to create a new work.” Planning for the new theatrical production is underway to start production in 2025, and Izubuchi Yutaka, who worked on “Space Battleship Yamato 2199,” will be participating.

Khara, where Director Anno serves as representative director, has been granted the rights to produce a new anime series by Voyager Holdings, the original creator and copyright holder of “Space Battleship Yamato,” and has received permission to use the copyright from Tohokushinsha to produce the new anime.

Director Anno and Mr. Izubuchi talked long about wanting to work on Yamato to have fun in retirement. Director Anno even participated in the remake series “Space Battleship Yamato 2199,” which Izubuchi directed. “Space Battleship Yamato” has also been remade into a series, such as “Space Battleship Yamato 2199,” but Director Anno said, “I’m going to take a different path from the remake series,” and “I can’t talk about the content yet.”

All three volumes of the legendary 8mm film version of “Space Battleship Yamato,” released around 1977-78, were screened at the event. The 8mm film version is a re-edited version of all 26 TV series episodes. Unlike the edited version of “Space Battleship Yamato: The Movie,” released in 1977, it is footage that only a few people know about and includes new narration. Approximately 36 minutes of footage from all three volumes was shown in theaters for the first time. The first episode of the TV series, “SOS Earth!! Resurrection of Space Battleship Yamato,” was also screened.

The first Space Battleship Yamato anime series was broadcast in 1974, and other works have since been produced, including Space Battleship Yamato 2, Farewell to Space Battleship Yamato, Warriors of Love, and Space Battleship Yamato Resurrection. A remake of the first film, Space Battleship Yamato 2199, was released in theaters from 2012 to 2014, and a sequel to 2199, Space Battleship Yamato 2202, Warriors of Love, was released in theaters and on TV from 2017 to 2019.

A two-part series, Space Battleship Yamato 2205: A New Voyage, was released in theaters in 2021 and 2022. The latest in the seven-part remake series, Yamato Forever REBEL3199, will be released on November 22nd, with the second chapter, Red Sun’s Sortie.
