“Mononoke the Movie: Chapter 3: Snake God” is scheduled for release on Friday, May 29, 2026.
The third Midaidokoro is a key character in the film. The released teaser visual depicts a wounded medicine seller falling through a vibrantly colored space. As the tagline states, “This is not normal!”, it hints at a confrontation with an unprecedentedly powerful supernatural phenomenon.
“Mononoke the Movie” has continued to depict the suffering of the inner palace. “Mononoke” originated from the episode “Bakeneko” of the “Ayakashi” series, which aired on Fuji TV’s Noitamina slot in 2006. It was broadcast as a TV anime series the following year and has since enjoyed enduring popularity.
While the TV anime series traversed various eras and locations, depicting multiple human emotions and salvation, “Mononoke the Movie” consistently depicts the “suffering of women” within the inner palace. Following the first film, “Mononoke the Movie: Karakasa ” (2024), and the second film, “Mononoke the Movie: Chapter 2: Fire Rat” (2025), “Mononoke the Movie: Chapter 3: Snake God” marks the final installment of the trilogy.
The trailer features Tenshi (voiced by Miyu Irino ), her wife, Empress Sachiko (voiced by Atsumi Tanezaki), and Hokuto Mizorogi (voiced by Kenjiro Tsuda). In stark contrast to the vibrant colors of the backgrounds, the anguished expressions and voices of the women confined to the special women’s quarters, the Ooku, are terrifying.
The medicine seller (voiced by Kamiya Hiroshi), who is usually calm and collected, trembles as he says, “This is too much to handle…” suggesting that the supernatural phenomena depicted in this work and the passion that gave rise to them are unprecedentedly powerful.
Sawashiro Miyuki “A chilling presence, like a different version of you and me.” Sawashiro Miyuki, who has been announced as an additional cast member, will play the third Empress Dowager, who was the wife of the third Emperor, 150 years before the time of the story. She will be an essential key character who connects the past and the present. Sawashiro Miyuki commented, “She is a chilling presence, like a version of you and me in an ‘if’ scenario. It’s unknown how she will turn out when combined with the illustrations, so I’m quietly and nervously awaiting the release date.”
