The hugely popular anime series “Crayon Shin-chan” began airing on Manga Action in 1990. Since its television anime debut in 1992, the series has remained loved by people of all ages. Since the first film, “Crayon Shin-chan: Action Kamen vs. the High-Heeled Demon King,” was released in 1993, a total of 32 films have been released. My Yokai Vacation,” is scheduled for release in the summer of 2026. This 33rd film in the series is set not in Japan or overseasā¦but in Yokai Land? The Nohara family travels to Hiroshi’s hometown of Akita to watch the Omagari Fireworks Festival, a summer tradition in Akita Prefecture. At the same time, an incident causes Yokai to escape from Yokai Land and wreak havoc in Akita, Kasukabeā¦and all over Japan? The Nohara family is lured into the Land of Yokai, where they embark on an unpredictable adventure through a mysterious, nostalgic world.
The film is directed by Masaki Watanabe, who has been directing the TV anime “Crayon Shin-chan” since 2022 and has been storyboarding and directing “Crayon Shin-chan the Movie” since 2024. Watanabe, who is directing the series for the first time with this film, commented, “I feel both the pressure and the deep emotion of taking over as director.
This time, the story is set in the Land of Yokai, where Japan’s original landscape remains, and Shinnosuke, who has become a tengu, plays a significant role! The Nohara family encounters various yokai, and as always, a chaotic and exciting story awaits.”
The screenplay is by Yoshiko Nakamura, who also wrote the script for the TV anime “Crayon Shin-chan.” “I feel that compared to when I was a child, we live in an age where many things change in the blink of an eye. ‘Some things were better in the old days, but they are still better now. And I’m sure they will continue to be better in the future.’ With this wish in mind, I wrote the script for the ‘Crayon Shin-chan Movie,’ though I was nervous,” he said, expressing his strong feelings about his first participation in the film series.
Furthermore, Yumiko Kobayashi, who plays Shinnosuke, also expressed her excitement for the film’s completion, saying, “Set in my dad’s hometown of Akita, all sorts of well-known monsters go on a rampage alongside Shin-chan! What a strange and mysterious story unfolds between the monsters and Shin-chan! I can’t wait to spend a magical and fun summer with Shinnosuke!” A super teaser visual and special video have also been released.
