The box office information for the theatrical re-release of the latest work in the Gundam anime series, Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuX -Beginning- (released January 17th), has been announced. In the 74 days since its release, it has recorded a box office revenue of 3.34 billion yen and an audience of 2.028 million people.
This revenue has already surpassed the box office revenue of Mobile Suit Gundam III: Encounters in Space (released in 1982) by over 2.3 billion yen, making it the second highest in the history of the Gundam movie series.
The top spot is Mobile Suit Gundam SEED FREEDOM, which was released in 2024 and broke the record for the first time in 42 years, with a box office revenue of 5.38 billion yen. Mobile Suit Gundam GQuuuuuuX is a story about Amate Yuzuriha, a high school girl who lives peacefully in a space colony floating in space.
She meets Nyaan, a war refugee girl, and gets involved in the illegal mobile suit duel competition “Clan Battle.” Amate, who goes by the entry name “Machu,” drives GQuuuuuX and throws herself into fierce daily battles.
The world is about to enter a new era when an unidentified mobile suit called Gundam, which is being pursued by both the space military and the police, and its pilot, Shuuji, appear before her. This new Gundam series is a joint production by Studio Color, which produces the Evangelion series, and Sunrise, which makes the Gundam series.
It was broadcast on the Nippon Television Network, and this movie version was released before the TV anime broadcast, with some episodes reconstructed for theatrical screening. The film is directed by Kazuya Tsurumaki, who directed the 2021 Evangelion: 3.0+1.0 Thrice Upon a Time series, with series composition by Yoji Enokido and mechanical design by Ikuto Yamashita, bringing together a star-studded team of staff.
Tomoyo Kurosawa provides the voice of the main character, Amate Yuzuriha (Machu). Yui Ishikawa and Shuuji Ito play Nyaan, who Shimba Tsuchiya plays. The TV anime will be broadcast on 30 Nippon TV affiliates every Tuesday from 24:29 starting April 8th.
