McDonald’s new commercial, “Big Mac ‘Let’s smile tomorrow too, then and now,” has been released on McDonald’s YouTube channel. The commercial uses famous scenes from three 1980s anime works, “Maison Ikkoku,” ” Kimagure Orange Road, ” and ” Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love? “. It will be aired nationwide from July 1st.

McDonald’s aired “Big Mac ‘Let’s smile tomorrow too'” in July of last year as a TV commercial symbolizing the “strongest combination” of the Big Mac hamburger and Coca-Cola. The commercial released this time is the second installment, and like the previous one, it uses the song from Coca-Cola’s commercial, “I Feel Coke,” along with famous scenes from “Maison Ikkoku,” “Kimagure Orange Road,” and “Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?” Reina Moriya of Sakurazaka46 also appeared in the commercial.

In addition, comments have been received from Rumiko Takahashi, the original author of “Maison Ikkoku,” WAVE STUDIO, the production company of Matsumoto Izumi, the original author of “Kimagure Orange Road,” and Shoji Kawamori and Moriya, the directors of “Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?” Rumiko Takahashi’s comment: “I’m honored to be able to participate in a McDonald’s commercial!!

WAVE STUDIO’s comment: “It was a pleasant surprise to see Kimagure Orange Road, along with other famous anime works, featured in the “Big Mac” x “I feel Coke” commercial, which recalls a time when society as a whole was very energetic and everyone was obsessed with work and love. Each cut of the anime has been remembered with various emotions as if it were my own real experience. While there is a nostalgic atmosphere of that time, the scenes depicted themselves have a universality that can be sympathized with by all generations.

I hope that both those who grew up in the same generation as “Kimagure Orange Road” and those who are not will be able to feel the heat and energy of the era when these works were created from this commercial and that they will also enjoy the charm and worldview of the heroines that are common to the three anime works in the main anime.

Comment from Director Shoji Kawamori Frankly, I am thrilled and grateful that they chose the theatrical film “Do You Remember Love?” even though there are many memorable TV and OVA anime from the 1980s. I’m glad they drew a scene of Minmay and the others eating hamburgers (laughs).

When I watch the commercial, I feel a bittersweet, refreshing, youthful sensation, and the atmosphere of the era is revived, evoking a strong sense of nostalgia. I think the atmosphere of the 1980s, when idols were in their prime, with surfing, cars, and fashion in Japan, and the background music used at the time, is nostalgic, and I feel that “songs transcend time.” It’s been more than 40 years since then, but when I listen to the song and watch the video, I feel as though I’ve traveled back in time, and there’s a “super-space-time feeling” that transcends both time and space.

“Macross” has been portrayed as one of the themes of “culture shock,” but I realized once again that food and drinks, such as Big Macs and Coca-Cola, are also part of the concept of “food culture = culture.” I would be grateful if you could enjoy the commercial video with that feeling in mind as you reflect on the times.

Comment from Reina Moriya (Sakurazaka46): When I was young, I would order a Happy Meal with my friends and choose my favorite toy. One of my favorite things was playing with the playground equipment at the store. When I was a student, I would ask my friends, “Shall we stop by McDonald’s today?” on the way home from club activities.

I am honored to be in a commercial for McDonald’s, which has been a part of my life as I grew up. It has always been close to me, and I have never really thought about it, but looking back, I have received many big smiles from them. This is a work that will evoke a sense of nostalgia, even in its newness. You’ll watch this commercial and have a big smile along with a Big Mac.

Comments from the animation production team and cast appearing in the Big Mac TV commercial: In this new TV commercial, the singer of the song “I Feel Coke” has been changed to Ueda Masaki. It also incorporates scenes from classic anime series such as “Maison Ikkoku,” “Kimagure Orange Road,” and “The Super Dimension Fortress Macross: Do You Remember Love?” to create a video that can be enjoyed by a wide range of customers, including younger generations who are unfamiliar with anime from the 1980s. Below are comments from the production teams of the three popular anime series from the 1980s that appear in the commercial, as well as from Sakurazaka46’s Moriya Rena, who appears in the commercial with her lovely, big smile.
