It has been revealed that Inoue Honoka will play the lead role of Anne Shirley in the new TV anime adaptation of Montgomery’s classic novel Anne of Green Gables, Anne Shirley.

Nakamura Aya will also appear in the series as Marilla, the elderly sibling who takes in the orphan Anne; Matsumoto Yasunori as Matthew; Miyase Naoya as Gilbert, Anne’s rival; and Miyamoto Yume as Diana, who becomes Anne’s lifelong friend. It has also been revealed that Kawamata Hiroshi will be the director, and Tsuchiya Kenichi will be in charge of character design.

“I’ve loved the world of Anne of Green Gables since I was a child, so from the time of the audition, I knew I wanted to play Anne. But I never thought it would come true! I wondered if it was a dream. It was a joy that I can’t put into words! At the same time, because it’s such an excellent title with such a long history, I also felt a lot of anxiety and pressure.

To borrow Anne’s words, ‘Isn’t it wonderful that there is so much to discover?’ These words have been a great support to me. I am so excited and looking forward to the scenery I will see through Anne!” she said. “I will do my best to portray Anne Shirley’s feelings with all my heart. I hope you enjoy it along with the wonderful images and music!”

“Anne of Green Gables” depicts the protagonist Anne, who is highly sensitive and can turn sadness into joy with her brilliant imagination, as she makes repeated mistakes and grows together with her family and friends. The TV anime directed by Takahata Isao was broadcast in 1979 as the fifth installment of the “World Masterpiece Theater” series and will be made into an anime again. “Anne Shirley” will be broadcast on NHK Educational TV in April. It consists of 24 episodes.
